Quick round up of the last couple of days. Drove from Westport to Franz Josef Glacier yesterday, with a few photo stops, notably Pancake Rocks. Had an early night, in anticipation of my big day today - heli-hiking up the glacier!
But the helicopter had to cancel because of the weather - boo. The alternative activity was a 5-hour hike with a Lucy Liu lookalike guide - but that would have meant another night spent at Franz Josef, which would have knocked my itinerary even further off track. And it's occurred to me that the only chance I have of watching Newcastle get relegated is in Queenstown - even if they don't have bars open at 4 in the morning, they may have hotels with all the sport on. So, I need to get there for tomorrow night...
Anyway, to make up for missing the heli-hike, I did three hikes of my own - two to see the glaciers, and one to walk round a lake and see Mount Cook. The second glacier one had a sign saying "creeks may be difficult to cross after heavy rain" - yep, I can vouch for that. If I didn't need to cross it to get back, there was one in particular which I would have probably refused - it was definitely deeper the second time round... Anyway, that's another story.
I've settled into Haast for the night - driving over the bridge into town was amazing, a beautiful cloudless sunset over the sea on my right, and mountains in every other direction. And 'Licensed To Ill' on at full volume m/
I'm actually managing to upload some photos on this PC so I hope you get to see them. In the meantime, if anyone finds out where I can watch the Toon match, please let me know. I shall have my own "Going Down Down Under" party.
