After spending a mad couple of hours once in Medan, en route to pulau weh, we decided to give Medan another go and spend 8 hours there (en route to pulau weh again).
After doing a bit of research, I planned for me and kev to see the Istana Maimon (a grand palace), masjid raya (a mosque) then finish our day relaxing and eating in Medan mall.
It was an overcast day in Medan... Perfect for walking. So kev and I started walking from the airport to the Istana. About 20 mins into the walk, I started to realise how heavy my bag is and how hot and dusty it is.
We made it to the Istana alright. Was not entirely impressed though. It had nothing but a grand throne to show for. The throne room was empty... Not even a tv to keep you occupied while sitting in the throne! But comfy place to read a book / play with your iPhone I thought :)
When we got out of the Istana, we were approached by a couple of guys who claimed to be students on a mission to do a project involving talking to tourists. We agreed to participate and answered their well rehearsed questions while being videod by a phone.
When the students asked us to go back to their university with them to talk to the rest of their class, it wasn't a tough decision to go with them in favour of seeing a mosque and a mall.
So our day in Medan then became:
1. Drive to uni (well... Poly) with 5 friendly students
2. Got stopped by a cop who was bribed off (by one of the students)
3. Q&A session with about 30 students and their teacher
4. Me singing the first verse of "a whole new world"
5. The students returning the favour and singing us some songs
6. Kev answering heaps of questions about England and football (2 things the students seemed to love the most, esp the football... Esp man united!)
7. Eating mee aceh with prawns (yummy!!!)
8. Being dropped off to the airport by the students and then watch them get pulled over by a cop (again!!!)
Lesson learnt: Indonesians are about as BPL mad as Singaporeans.
Best spend: mee aceh $2
