Having an awesome time in SF. After sleeping the day away on Sunday, Amelia picked me up from the hostel I stayed at on Monday morning and we got a taxi back to her place. Her housemate is away at the moment so I get to sleep in a bed!
We spent Monday afternoon wandering around San Francisco State University where Amelia goes and also had a job interview. I decided to have a vast amount of school spirit (Go the Gators!) and buy a SF State Uni t-shirt of which they had many spectacular and varied designs. People seem to be amused by my ineptness at following American customs and figuring out American money. The first taxi driving I had from the airport to the hostel kindly reminded me that I really needed to be tipping him. The coffee guy at uni seemed amused when he asked me whether I wanted a single, double or triple and I stared blankly for a few seconds. Such events continue to occur. People don't seem to be very sure where I'm from. The first time I was asked I answered "Melbourne" and the response I got was "Oh, that's in Belgium" so I have since decided to answer "Australia".
Yesterday we did a bit of shopping downtown and then went to Chinatown for a late lunch. The service at lunch reminded me very much of what it must be like to dine at Fawlty Towers. Menus were literally thrown at us, Amelia's tofu came out about 10 mins earlier than my noodles and while we waited for the noodles we were told rather forcefully that we needed to eat the tofu before it got cold, we got charged for things we didn't order and got yelled at when we questioned it. And the food was only ok, no where near good enough to make up for the service. Anyway, I found the whole experience hilarious and we broke with custom and left NO TIP. Then we scuttled out the door before the lady yelled at us for not tipping her.
Amelia and her boyfriend and I went out for cocktails last night at the "expensive" cocktail bar ($6 per cocktail) and then had the traditional SF burrito at the end of the night. Twas a very fun night.
Love and hugs to Neptune and Bunni. Love to Sammy.
