We got a Greyhound coach to Johannesburg from Bulawayo which wasn't that cofortable and we didn't sleep too well. The boarder crossing took quite a long time as they searched (not very well) through everyone's bags and there were about 20 coaches going through at the same time as us! At least the Visas were free for us. We got there about 10 in the morning to see lots of fast food chains and a generally very different feel to the rest of Africa! As the fast food was the cheapest, we went for that, especially after having mainly rice and chicken for so long!
I looked up online how to get to Durban from there and found that there was a comfy overnight train leaving the next day. We decided that would be better than a coach so just popped out of the station and found a very good hotel, especially as it only cost 8 dollars each! We settled down there and as we had had so many warnings about getting stabbed or mugged in Joberg, decided to be very slobby for a day and just relax there. We got some take away pizza and watched crappy tv and slept after having a lovely hot shower (I didn't realise how much I missed them)! The next day we went to the train station (which was also the bus station) and tried to book the train ticket. We found out there that the Wednesday train hadn't been working for a while. This meant we'd need to get a bus there. So we didn't have to pay for accomodation, we decided to get the overnight bus and because it was cheaper, we got the one that left at 9 rather than 10... I think it was a mistake.... We went with Intercape bus this time rather than greyhound and it was a lot more comfortable! We had also bought sleeping pills from a pharmacy in the station so we could sleep fine. The reason I think it was a mistake is that we arrived at 4 in the morning.... When we arrived, we sat at the station for a little bit before walking to the backpackers I had found online. This walk took us an hour taking us to 5:30 but as it was still so early, we decided to sit on a bench for a bit overlooking the harbour. When we got to where the backpackers was, we managed to get in and were so exhasted we slept until 2 (well luke did anyway)! It was slightly dissapinting as there is no social area but it's a place to stay so it's fine.
