Our main reason for coming to Durban was so that we could learn to dive! So the day after we arrived (after spending it resting) we were ready to start! We had to walk for 40 mins to find the office then when we got there, they didn't realise it was 2 people! This was fine though, and they were all so laid back about everything. Our instructor was a 21 year old guy called Kyle. He was really great fun and introduced us to beer fines. This is if you ever do anything stupid or not what you were supposed to do then you owed the other person a beer. We didn't have to do too many but a few were needed. Our first day was done in a pool nearby where we learnt the basic skills and got used to diving. In the evening we had to do the theory online as we had opted to do this rather than spend a day (and 500 rand) having lessons. We didn't realise how long it would take us so Kyle was dissapointed the next day... This was fine as he leant us a manual so we could read it easier than online.
The next day we were to do our first two open water dives then one in the aquarium there! The first two dives were combined into one and we did it with another guy who was completing his open water course. This was brilliant! It was just off the beautiful beach and it was so amazing! Sadly we dind't have time to go out to the reef but as we were going to the aquarium later that day we were fine with it. It was just me, Luke and Kyle in the aquaium, finishing the last of our skills and then just enjoying ourselves with the obsticles and the fish! There were people peering at us through the windows and taking pictures of us which was quite novel.
The final day was meant to be our final 2 open water dives from a boat but when we got there early in the morning and completed the last of our theory quizes, it was cancelled because of adverse weather conditions. The next two days were also forecasted to be bad weather so we booked our next trips for thursday. This means that we have 3 days to do other things. We were thinking about driving to the Drakensburgs but we wanted to spend a little longer there so decided not to. So on the Sunday we relaxed in the uShaka complex and played some games of massive chess against each other then on the monday we sorted out catching up on blogs and booking our car hire.
