This week was my last full week with camps international. I'll definately be very sad to say goodbye to everyone here who I've become such close friends with and I'll definately try and see them when i go to Diani. What a great week to finish on!
On Monday we went to Rukinga ranch, where the old campsite used to be, and did some road clearing with pangas (machetes) and slashers for the grass. This was done so that if there was a fire then it wouldn't be able to pass accross and hopefully stop. This was quite boring work but we had kay kai tell us about how he had to kill a lion once and how steve had to crawl out from a under a herd of elephants! In the afternoon we had to count the species that we saw in a certain area and mark where we saw them on a gps tracker.
The next day we went on SAFARI!!! It was really amazing to see so many animals!! My faverite thing to see was a pride of lions underneath a tree about 50 meters away from the jeep. Quite hard to take pictures of them from a distance though! Sadly just before lunch one of the truck's tires blew and we had to help steve to change the tire in the middle of Tsavo east!! He told ellie and connie to stay in the jeep as they are so slow! This meant that we were only able to go on a short one in the afternoon because he didn't want to get stuck in the middle of no where! There were so so many animals around, and lots of herds of elephants and Giraffe, I didn't see a single zebra though compared to the thousands in Tsavo west.
From wednesday to friday we went back to itini primary school and finished of the toilet. This has been the first time that they haven't got a contractor in to do what we have done so it feels so so satisfying to finish!! After work on thursday and friday we played some games of volleyball with and against some of the kids and teachers which was really great fun! George and michelle look like giants next to them though!
Yesterday we went on a 'bush adventure' where we went into the local hills on a really scenic walk along buffalo valley (none of us saw any buffalo though!) and then up a steep climb to some caves where we stopped for lunch. The two rangers who were with us and steve were very good at looking at the footprints in the sand so we saw leopard, buffalo and baboon footprints but sadly no animals! When we reached the top we did a bit of shelter building, archery with the local tribe's arrows and starting a fire with some sticks and elephant poo!
The time I've been here has been so so amazing, I'm so so glad that I found camps international and I would strongly suggest other people to give it a go! It's all gone so quickly but i really can't wait to start my travells with luke and Seumas!! I'm now off to book my bus back to Nairobi where I'll meet up with luke!
