So i arrived at cap kenya about 5 hours after everyone else because the coach i was on was so so slow! The people on the bus had to tell me when to get off which was quite entertaining as i thought it wouldn't take quite as long. The whole journey was 8 hours long. Wow. At least there was pleasant company and nice air condisiioning.
I entered the camp to see6 nicely sized bandahs (huts) and we were 3 to a bandah. I was with George and Michael. There were 5 others (connie, ellie, two toms and michael (pronouced michelle from holland). They were all very lovely and we get along very well so there are no arguments or bikering. We had a slow start to both days as we got to know each other and the wonderful camp kenya staff that were based there. We got a tour of the local area and the local school were we would be building a toilet together with the local parents. Another project is to help them build an elephant fence by dipping rags in used motor oiil and hanging it up. Such hot work and no way to apply more sun cream as our hands were covered!!
All of the meals cooked by joffry are amazing!! we got to taste ugali (maize type meal) and had a veriety of other meals. One afternoon we started to make poo paper out of a mix of elephant poo and used paper. It is a way to help the community get allong with the elephants and make a profit by selling these pieces of paper with paintings on to tourists.
As we go around we are always accompanied by a guard called kay kay. This always seems a bit over the top but he's a very nice person so we can talk together.
In the evenings we have swahili lessons so we can converse with tthe community more. We all agreed that british people take the fact that so many other people speak english for granted and we all wanted to learn a lot more.
Getting to know everyone has been really great, getting to know what people fear (like george has a massive fear of any insect) and what people love (food). Managing to get enock to join in our card games of uno and cheat ( he's too nice to cheat so looses a lot! )
Anyway, i will be a ble to update this blog every sunday when we go to the nearest town and get some things from the supermarket and some food from the market.
I hope everyone at hope is really well and are content that i am safe and extremely happy.
