Boarding our 5:55am train was a delightful experience. No this is not sarcastic is was genuinely enjoyable because we were so well organised! Arriving in plenty of time we were able to snatch the best seats on the train - they reclined!!! However, although Nic and Miranda had peaceful sleeps, after Josh was awoken by a small Thai girl rummaging in his (don't worry) empty pockets and taking a peek under Mirandas blanket, Chris and Josh stayed on security watch getting 20 minutes sleep between them. 6 hours later we arrived at the border.
Miranda told Chris that she already loved Cambodia. So as not to crush Mirandas spirits Chris kept quiet about the fact we were most definitely still in Thailand. However, her spirits were apparently DESTROYED at the visa office where she insisted that the shack we were taken to by our tuktuk driver who got commission on visas sold there was the cheapest and only option. 5 minutes later we were at the official border where we bought visas for half the price from the government. Miranda later admitted she was tired and sweaty and didn't want to move.
Nevertheless despite passing several "welcome to cambodia" signs, Cambodia proved itself to be very elusive because apparently we were STILL in Thailand. Miranda was still unaware. 27 forms later and one quarantine inspection we were in poipet - CAMBODIA!!! next stop siem reap.
Once again the locals tried to rip us off saying that the $49 taxi was the cheapest and only we could find. We refused to pay, marched out the building and immediately found a $25 taxi! Despite the fact that the car had no seat belts and the driver paid off several policemen, this was a deal for a 2.5 hour drive!
Late afternoon we arrived at our "snob"stel. Despite being the cheapest hostel we could find for some reason it was RIDICULOUSLY nice! Today had been a complete success! Indoor pool and free wifi were some of the bonuses. However, we had to share a room with THE GRUMPIEST BORING PERSON EVER. we woke him up SO many times - for some reason he didn't find it funny! He literally slept all day and tried to turn the ac off. We immediately corrected this mistake and hid the control.
After a play in the pool and a quick meal at the hostel we hired some "bikes" for $1.50 for 2 days. They were not worth $0.25. That evening we cycled to the temple to estimate the distance for the next morning and checked out the night markets - all buying kooky temple pants for the next day!
You will understand why the bikes were so useless when you read our next blog....
Until next time, heres a question for you: how many times can Chris break a bike (or two) in a couple of hours?
Much love
