We'd like you to cast your minds back to a typically cool mid August afternoon last summer. Alex Neary and Joshua Don were sitting in their local Weatherspoons getting, rather typically, battered. It was the day of the release of the much anticipated A Level results, Alex was drowning he sorrows at his general failure to get the results he wanted, whilst Josh was getting drunk . . . . . .well, for the sake of getting drunk. Suddenly, and for reasons I cant recollect, Alex managed to muster some coherant words together - "Anyone up for travelling round the world in an adventure of epic proportions"?? Suddenly, Alex caught a glimps of raised Guinness in the corner, and an equally drunken Josh said, "Well, yeh, I'd be up for that". And, thinking nothing more of it, off we went to get some more drinks at the bar.........
6 Months On -
Rather incrediably, we're in the tropical paradise that is FIJI!!!! Flights were painless enough, but we both have been suffering with a fair amount of jet-lag, sleeping on our first night here in Nadi (the capital) for about seventeen hour. The rooms were basic and Alex was awoken on the second day to be told there was a lizard next to him - now considering it was first thing in the morning and Alex had no contact lenses in, Alex went and shat himself and moved at a pace more appropriate to a crocodile sleping next to him!!
We made the move to Mana island, which compared to the urbanised and dirty Nadi town, it was pretty beautiful. The following two days we both just chilled out on the beach, swimming and sunbathing - sunbathing and swimming. Alex's skin had a battle with the sun......and lost, leaving him very tender for the next few days. Josh, despite his factor fifty, still felt the effect of the sun on his hands and back. We were introduced to "Kava" by the locals, a drink made from the roots of the Kava tree ment to relax and renourish - tasted like dirt, but Josh and I were more than willing to try a cup..or two...or twelve!! The highlight....without a doubt, was our island hopping trip, when, for around fifteen quid, we got to go to a few other islands and use the facilities of ppl paying around hundred quid a night!! We both went in the best swimming pool we've ever scene, so that was pretty cool. However the fun started on the journey home where we were savaged by a rainstom in the middle of the Pacific Ocean....Fiji style. We literally couldnt see more then ten metres infront of us. Earlier in the trip we had dropped off a couple of locals to do some spear fishing and we were going to pick them up on the way back 3 hours later. However due to the visability being so bad they dropped us off on the island where castaway the film with tom hanks was made. We were all soaked through and so cold and wet that the warmest place to be was the sea, this was easily the surrealist moment of both of are lives. we waited for half an hour for them to come and pick us back up. we still had to make the 20 minute treck back to mana island, the sea was so choppy that we all had to sit down one end of the boat while one of locals stood at the other end trying to find are way back to mana island. After about 10 minutes they realised we were going the wrong way and had to turn in a diffrent direction. Finally we made it back in one peice soaked but safe. The next day we rented some snorkling gear and we went out snorkling which was a fantastic experiance seeing loads of different fish and Alex found a blue star fish which was crazy.
Back in Nadi for a night, hence this being the first time in days we could use the internet, and we fly to New Zealand early tomorrow. So...all is good, great infact.
Quote of the Week - "I don't DO getting burned" Alex, eight hours before his back was cremated
Beer Test (by Alex) - 4/10 My dad would hate this one, it has all the sweetness of Kronenbourg but somehow that horrible dryness of Castlemaine - things can only improve!!!
Fijian Bitter Test (by Josh)- 5/10
