Zambia 2012- The departure...
It was a rainy summer's day in England...perfect for a lads trip to Africa.
The day had finally arrived- 7 long months of planning, Facebook messaging, working, wishing, booking, injections and wondering if 100 dollars would make us millionaires were we finally ready... YES
After Luke had established it was Heathrow we were flying from (NOT Gatwick!) we all met up in the foyer with excitement and anticipation of the epic trip that was ahead of us. At check-in it was with some trepidation that the bags were loaded onto the scales....although I think we all knew Dan would always be the heaviest! Although we weren't quite expecting the " oh that means you'll all have space for my presents"...
The urban myth of getting an upgrade by being polite and holding a deep longing (loving) gaze into a wrinkly old botoxed old bats eyes is 100% true.. It doesn't happen.. The actual response is "what's the next stupid question".. Response "are there any seats in business class"!! The result after all that hassle is your bags get sent to Tibet and you end up feeling slightly DURTY.
The next 30 minutes turned out to be fairly painful...:
- Dan getting rinsed at the currency exchange for dollars
- Luke getting frisked at security, forced to take off his monster hiking books and dropping all his change in the rollers of the bag scanner
-Harvey and Joss spending 10 minutes at WH Smiths trying to negotiate down the price of their head pillows...the bargaining had begun.
Time for a beer.
The presents- each person was to bring a gift for all other members.
1. Harvs- Lego pieces
Harvs- Phillip (The London Queens Guard)
Barns- Dancing Debs (The Fitness Instructor)
Joss- HP (Mr Harry Potter)
Dan- Jacob (The Clown)
Luke-
2. Joss- 5 rubber ducks to be taken whenever near water
3.Barns- 5 individual beer coolers (joss got the lucky t*** McGhee')
4. Dan- London 2012 bands and 'GB Party Glasses'
5. Luke- 5 pairs of, what can only be described as, Daniel Craig Bond Shorts.....Mmm nice
Aisle ticket Roulette started with Luke long legs hoping to be given that extra 15cm of room in cattle class! Barns had already jumped ship and sat next to biggie!! The next 18 hours of travel included.. Sleeping..film watching... Rationing our cheese to survive the flight and a general longing to get there!!!
Goodbye and so long
Until next time
