I don't think so. I consider it rock, not metal. Kurt Cobain, who was eemxetrly big in the grunge scene (I'm not claiming he invented it, by the way, just that he was big in it) was very against metal, especially the glam and hair metal that was popular at the time.I consider it a good genre in its own right (if a little soft for my tastes) but not techincally metal.
