Day 22 (12 of trip) = 22nd November 2008 - Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam
Today was a travel day as we left Cambodia behind and header to the border into Vietnam. The border was a lot more of a border than between Cambodia and Thailand.Once successfully through, we headed on for the city formal known as Saigon, but recently renamed as Ho Chi Minh City (HCMC).
We had a free afternoon and after a wander around and a trip up the Sheraton Hotel, to check out the views from the rooftop bar we headed out for our final nights meal.To say goodbye to the tour leader, Vanny and two chaps who were only doing the Cambodia section of the tour. After some food we headed to the Go-Go bar (very strange place, one bar, four levels, each competing against each other for your business).
Day 23 (13 of trip) = 23rd November 2008 - Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam
Day 13 was a free day, in-between tours and nothing I didn't really do much.I wandered round the main central area (district one) and visited a few of the sites. There wasn't a massive amount to do in HCMC, a lot of people went to see James Bond.HCMC was manic, after being in Cambodia which was quite rural, developing and poor, we hit a city which was literally full of moped and scooters. They were everywhere and just swarmed down the road in there thousands.Crossing the road was somewhat of a mission, you had to walk and prey!
Day 24 (14 of trip) = 24th November 2008 - Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam
Day 14 we headed out of town to see the famous Cu Chi Tunnels.Chu Chi is a vast underground network of interconnecting tunnels stretching a massive 250km underground. They were all dug by hand and a very popular tourist attraction relating to the Vietnam / American War.The tunnels were used by the Viet Cong to hide from the Americans.Numerous bomb craters (now ponds) were present from B52 bombs. We say numerous hidey-holes as well as traps and weapons that the locals created.
We then got our chance to experience the tunnels.A mere 40m in all, but it was incredibly small, hot, claustrophobic experience to squeeze myself trough these tunnels.I had to hop like a kangaroo as there was no way I could walk or fancy crawling. After my 40m, I was definitely ready to get out.How they lived under there I have no idea!
After the tunnels, I managed to do all the remaining HCMC sites in about an hour and was left wondering what else to do.
Day 25 (15 of trip) = 25th November 2008 - Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam
Dam Sem Water Park, sunbathing area "for foreigners" - lol
In the evening we got our first over night train (my first ever) and had been warned that they were not very luxurious to say the least. As we rocked up to HCMC Train Station I was expecting the worse, although thankfully to my surprise we were actually booked on the "5-Star Express" to Nah Trang.Five star it was, western toilets (no squat loo's), flat screen TV's (playing Vietnamese rubbish unfortunately), room service, generally nicer than some guesthouses I've stayed in.Needless to say a goodnights sleep before arriving in Nah Trang.
