BULA!
So, Fiji. You wont be surprised to hear that I haven't got a lot to tell you! Our days were spent lazing on the beach, topping up our tans, watching the sunrise and watching it set.
Flying into Nadi, the mainland, we spent a few hours in the airport before boarding the Yasawa flyer, the boat that would transfer us around the 5 islands we visited within the Yasawa group. Our first stop was Beachcomber, a tiny island that you can literally walk around in 15 minutes.Beachcomber is known as the 'Party Island', and is catered for backpackers. Not wanting to let the party down, we did party, but I got way to drunk and was in bed by midnight! We did do a great snorkeling trip off the reef here though where we were able to see a bunch of tropical fish and loads of bright purple starfish!
Our next stop was Waya Lai Lai, and to be honest it was much of the same.We lay in the sun and cooled off in the crystal clear waters when necessary. Leaving here we went to Long Beach, which was the worst of the places we stayed, and the rubbish weather that afternoon did not help either. From Long beach we continued north and stopped at Nabua Lodge for a couple of nights, which was a 45 minute walk through the jungle away from the rather more exclusive and expensive Oarsman's Bay. This beach was absolutely gorgeous, and we watched the sun set slowly into the sea before catching a water taxi, navigated by moon light back to our resort. We did encounter a massive spider and a cockrotch in our room here though, so I had to man-up and get rid of them before Claire would step back in the room…You've got to be the hero sometimes I suppose!
Our final stop was across the water to Sunrise Lagoon Resort, where we stayed in a tiny Bure, AKA a small hut with a straw roof and a lantern for light. That night we enjoyed some crab racing and sampled a lot of the local delicacy, CAVA. It's basically muddy water…not the tastiest drink in the world, but we thought we'd give it ago, and it sent you to sleep nicely!
From here it was a long boat back to the mainland. The weather was very good to us, bar one afternoon and the Fijian people for so friendly and happy. It was a great experience, and I suppose almost a holiday in the middle of our travels. It was nice to relax and chill out for a week before getting back on the gringo trail.
Next stop…Sydney.
