Following a nearly 12 hour train journey from Beijing with China's rif raf we arrived in Xi'an in the cold dark of the morning. It is interesting to note at this point that they have hot water on trains in order to enjoy Pot Noodles... I however, decided not to have one for the first day since being here, as my last had caused some discomfort ( I wont go into the runny details) as it was such a fiery b******! Our hostel offered free lifts from the train station and whilst on the way i was offered a 'snack' by a Chinese girl.... I hate half and discreetly hid the other half in my bag.... it was well minging! We were taken into the back door of the hostel, I was a little apprehensive, it wasn't the nicest of places. I was wrong however and the room is lovely as is the bar... we might stay a little longer! HOWEVER, you cant put your toilet paper down the toilet! After two days, the bin is stinking!
On our first day we visited the bell and drum towers in the city centre... good panoramic views of the old city and some 10 min performances of music... the drum tower was definitely better and oddly the less visited, even though the bell tower practrically sits in the busiest roundabout in China! We then headed for the Muslim Quarter... It is important to not at this point that Xi'an smells like a giant barbeque... it's awesome and definitely beats the eggy smell of beijing... we tried some 'Lamb' kebabs (although the meat was white!) and I finished them after Katherine whinged about the spices. We also had some fantastic sesame seed bread, we've now consumed for of these! Sheep's heads in the local shops provided amusement for me and absolute disgust for Barnes!
