Thailand- we arrived on the last night of New Year to warnings of an unsafe Bangkok, feeling a little worried and a bit aprehensive. New years eve was amazing! Thousands of people out on teh street, throwing water, shooting water but certainly not drinking it! Smearing mud on each others (and ours) clothes and faces and hair and legs and necks and every possible surface! It was loads of fun and any other time we would have partied all night- but being aware of the situation in Bangkok meant after and hour or two of fun (and after the sound of a gunshot) we retired to our hotel or farewell drinks and to say goodbye to Thou. it was sad leaving everyone after spending 24/7 with them for nearly 6 weeks but we were excited as Mummy was coming the next day!
We spent the morning making her welcome to Thailand banners. jon wanted to write on his "we'll have a riot of a time" but given the situation decided on to! Met mummy eventually at the airport where we also left Jane to go back to NZ. That night we went out for Grace's birthday and introduced Mum to the heat of Bangkok- she wasn't impressed but after a few Bacardi's seemed to start enjoying herself! The next day was spent sightseeing- the royal Palace, China market, a massive shopping centre (we had to escape the heat somehow!) and attempted to watch sunset from the edge of the Mekong River.
The next day we hopped on a mini bus with the gang very early and headed to the floating market. It was wicked. All the stalls are on the edge of the river and people even sell things from their boat. We had a James Bond style boat to take us down the River which was so much fun. Needless to say we haggled for a few things here and there! Next we we went to famous Bridge over the River Kwai which was awesome for the historical aspect but we didn;t really get enough time there. Then we went on an elephant trek- Jon and i had a pregnant elephant and I felt really bad that we were on her- she was massive! mum had a cute little one all to herself. it was really fun but very bumpy so hurts your bum a little bit. Lastly we headed to the Tiger Temple- a temple where all the tigers are reared as vegies by monks- we had photos taken with them and got really close to them- was pretty awesome again. Had such a fun day, made more special because Mummy was there.
On the Sunday we head to koh Chang on the bus. It is the second largest island in Thailand. After a long bus ride and a short ferry ride we finally arrived at our hotel. It was beautiful, set in rich green gardens with crazy pretty flowers and right on the beach. We had the best room EVER- opposite the swiming pool and within spitting distance of the sea. Not much to report about the week- we spent out time swimming, sunbathing, eating and drinking- such a hard life. The most activity we had was getting knocked off the lilo in the waves and having to clamber back on again! The lilo is still with us- currently on the front of jons backpack- we are going to see if it can make it all the way home!
After a tearful farewell at the airport with mummy Jon and I hoped on the last bus back to Bangkok- spending the next day avioding the thunder and lightening by going back to the shopping centre where Jon finally got his SLR camera- hence the reason i am writing this as he is off taking pictures...,.. again! When i mange to upload some, see if you can tell the difference! Hee!
We are currently in Laos- will update when we have seen a bit more of the country! Love to you all .
