Sunday provided another opportunity to recharge the batteries. Barnes used this time to plan our route for the next three weeks, cute and slightly anal! I uploaded more pictures (hope you enjoy them). In the evening we went in search of Tesco, which we had seen in the taxi the night before. Beat that Downsy! They sold some odd stuff including Aloe Flavoured Milk... it was Tesco Value as well! I tried some of their stuff from the deli including a deep-fried sandwich (I wasn't aware that's what it was when I bought it or I most certainly would have avoided it - it was yucky!). We topped up on 'QQ' sweets, the ones Kevin had shown us on the boat, M&M's - which Barnes is eating daily, and some chocolate covered corn - she was being adventurous!
On Monday we met a lovely Girl called Alicia (from Adelaide but living in Canada) who was in China by herself and not enjoying the hostel we are staying in - probably due to meeting an Englishman called James, who's soul goal in China is to sleep with all the girls, the night before. We took her under our wings and headed for Jing'an temple for some sightseeing. We stayed there for about 10mins... walking towards people's park for the Shanghai museum. We got there at 4.15pm (Yes the day started at about 1pm!), it was closing! After consulting with a nice chap with a map we decided to go to the French Concession. It's a little odd - European architecture with oriental skyscrapers all around. Hungry, the girls got some French bread from a 'Paul' bakery - 1.90pounds - I can get Kung Pao chicken for that! We had told Alicia about the awesomeness (yes, its probably a word) of the peking duck restaurant and surprisingly she had never had it, so there was no option to return. We had exactly the same food as before, being a little dangerous with a vegetable stir-fry as well! In the bar, later that night, we met some guys from England teaching in China... they were to play an important role in the following day!
Tuesday never really got going to the late afternoon, Alicia was keen to go to Tesco as was a scouse chap called Adam so we were more than happy to oblige. I bought more useless junk - what seemed like an uncooked spring roll that adam was more than happy to finish off - as well as some 56p spirits that we thought was Vodka. We sat in the bar drinking and playing Backpacker, were we met up with John (one of the English teachers), who assured us that there was a club called Bar Hulu, where westerners could drink for free. He seemed to have 'connections' in Shanghai but we thought this was too good to be true. We were accompanied by a chinese guy, also called John, who is living in California - we had two people who could speak chinese - always a bonus! True to form the bar was free, had good music and served good drinks. Needless to say we got plastered! Dancing on the bar and generally making fouls of ourselves. We also learn't how to play the dice game - a chinese drinking game. We repeated this foulishness in McDonalds at 4am - thank god for 24 hour McD's!
