We remain in Modragon as we are enjoying a few days rest. As well as that we have been learning a little more about this wine area.
Today we went out on the bikes: nothing too strenuous but a gentle meander through the local farm to the nearby town. Along the way we saw signs for vineyards we had never heard of as they edid not appear in the Decanter article. perhaps that's a lesson to learn: the English only get a little of what the area produces.
Next lesson was that Bollene, which appears to be a very insignificant town on the maps, is actually rather more than that: at least that is what it tries to convince tourists. We are, they say, close to Orange, the Ardeche gorge, Aix-en-Provence, Mont Ventoux. Now the latter is obvious as it can be seen from nearly everywhere. A bit hazy and misty at times, nevertheless it is unmistakable on the horizon.
Today was for gentle exercise but as we drifted gently into Bollene an eagle eye spotted a Cave so one had to make a visit. Called Bastide Jourdan, we entered the shop and was greeted a a very friendly manner by a young girl, shortly followed by a slightly older man. all aound was a wide range of wine and other produce - honey, lavender oil, chocolates and so on. We also found a lot more information about local wine producers, as well as maps and tourist guides.
I explained that were on bikes (I guess the helmets were a bit of give away) and that if we like what he offered we would return in a car! he was happy. We duly tasted a white Vigonier, which was a little thin we thought, but we then tried a very tasty red, a Cuvee Reserve 2009. Finally, as they were also selling a fizz, Brut and Demi-Sec, we decided to buy one for drinking at the camp site. But he gave us a taste: wow, it was good!
So we bought a bottle and promised to return on Thursday when we leave and head south.
