From Mendosa we had an 18 bus ride to the Lake District in Patagonia. Since our first long bus trip when Jolly found out we got our own TVs with ondemand movies he has been gagging to get back on another bus. Unfortunately when we got on the bus, we realised we didn't get TV's -he was not happy, I thought he was going to jump under the bus at one point. But we made it, and it was worth the trip. It's hard to believe we are even in the same country we were a few weeks ago, this is the opposite of the desert landscape we are used to seeing - The Lake District is stunning blue lakes surrounded by snow capped mountains. This is a popular ski town in the winter and that is exactly what it looks like. Most of the shops and restaurants look like log cabins, it's really cute. Jolly booked us a great hostel on the top of an apartment building which has amazing views over the Lake.
We were told that when the world was Gondwanaland, Patagonia (the southern part of Argentina) and New Zealand were attached. So Pategonia has a similar landscape to New Zealand. And it really does look like the South Island, it's stunning.
Our first day in Bariloche we went on a full day horse riding tour. We both got horses suited to us pretty well I think. Mine was slow, always lagging behind the rest of the group, did what she wanted and when she was sick of me telling her what to do she tried to nip my feet. Jolly's was stocky , got really sweaty and short of breath climbing the hills and farted constantly. We did the horse ride with a lovely Swedish couple and a very energetic border collie. The following day we were supposed to go for a 30km bike ride around the lake but (luckily) it was pouring with rain so we spent the day walking from chocolate shop to chocolate shop getting free samples.
We then caught a local bus to a smaller town an hour and a half away called Villa La Angosta and had 2 nights there. We spent our day there doing a 32km hike along a peninsula of the lake. I'm not sure why we thought it was ok for us to do a 30km hike - it was so exhausting and by half way I had blisters under both of my small toes. But we made it!!! and celebrated by going out for a delicious Mexican dinner. We went out at about 8pm and were the only ones there, turns out the rest of Argentina goes out for dinner at about the time we were leaving to go to bed (10pm), even the families with 6 year old kids! It's insane - they don't even have siesta here.
