Hi everyone from a very sunny warm Saturday evening at the YHA in Coffs Harbour - my preferred accommodation for the next three nights.
Thursday morning got up really early to catch the 7.45 train from the Blue Mountains back to Sydney with not much of a plan on what was going to happen for the rest of the time in Australia. Thought I might get a Greyhound Bus ticket from Sydney to Cairns with the ability to drop off anywhere that took my fancy. I checked it out and it's not that simple - so plumped for the train/bus combo.
Decided my first stop was a place called Port Macquarie simply because I'd been in the HYA in Katoomba the night before and overheard someone talking about it - the YHA in Katoomba was lovely almost like a hotel. Bought my ticket nearly 400 bucks but it meant that I'd got unlimited travel as long as I only went north and didn't double back on myself.
Rang the HYA in Port Macquarie and booked myself in for two nights - so everything sorted felt much better about everything - had been feeling a little low and lonely - so the new plan was to make sure I'd got accommodation going forward - not just flying by the seat of my pants.
Arrived in Port Macquarie after a seven hour journey but it actually didn't feel that long - their trains are so comfortable, clean and spacious - it was quite a pleasure. About an hour out of Sydney I saw my first kangaroo - at first I thought it was a deer but then realised it was a kangaroo I almost shouted out the everyone in the carriage that I'd seen a roo - stopped myself just in time. Arrived evening in Port Macquarie at the YHA - verey basic but again clean - I had to make my own bed things are getting really gritty now. Macquarie very nice - got up early agin the next morning to go to the koala hospital - had to be there before 8 that was feeding time and they actually move about more at that time. It was lovely to see them but quite sad also. Spent the afternoon walking and again saw the amazing birds - won't bore you again with everything I saw - enough to say it was breath-taking. Met a couple from England doing the campervan route but gave me a few hints on saving money. They told me to go the RSL club - there's one in every town they're for ex-servicemen - you can get a meal there for $5 outstanding.
Left Macquarie this morning at 9 for the train station in a place called Wauchope but my train wasn't leavering until 1 45 so plenty of time to look around but seeing that it only had one main streed it didn't take me long. But they did have an RSL club so I could try out the $5 meal - couldn't wait until 12 til it opened. I ordered the chicken lunch - chicken, potatoes and vegetable plus the all important gravy - very nice - if there is anyone out there that knows of a soup kitchen let me know - that will be my next stop. One day having dinner in the best restaurant in Sydney the next lunch in the RSL club - can't believe how versatile I am - I'll have to think which I prefer.
In Coffs Harbour now will be here until Tuesday morning - had a quick look round seems like a nice place but will report back next time I blog.
Thanks again to everyone who messages me - it means alot I've been feeling a little lonely recently. XXXXX
