Sorry that I have not updated this for a while but I have not had much access to the internet.
After leaving Taiping zoo the 10 of us met at Kutching on the island of Borneo to finish the last week of the zoo/orang program. After visiting a couple of orang sanctuarys we headed to the rain forest at Batang Ai to stay with the Iban tribe deep in the forest. It was a 90 minute journey on a very narrow boat along the rivers before reaching the longhouse we were to stay in.We arrived christmas eve and spent a quite night in playing cards etc before going to bed earley as we were all tired. Christmas day was spent with the locals and drinking the home made rice wine which was very strong.
The next 2 days we went trekking looking for orangs but did not find any as they are few and far between. We had a good time anyway. After returning to Kutching we all went our seperate ways, it was quite sad as I had made some good friends in the last 4 weeks were together.
I am now on the last but one day of my third project. It started in Kota Kinabula (KK)visiting another local tribe who were to be our guides on the climb up mount kinabula, after more rice wine and dancing with the locals the next day we got ready for the big climb, we arrived at the base on new years eve and after a good meall all went to bed around 10pm as we had to start early the next day.
On new years day we climbed to the overnight camp ready for an early start the next day. After getting up at 2 am we went to the summit the highest point in asia. It was bit cloudy so we did not see the sun rise but it was worth the hard slog getting to the top. Now came the harder bit getting down to the bottom which was 8km away. I made it around 1pm with very sore legs.
The next day we spent in the jungle sleeping in a hammock,it was great fun with some rather strange noises and a lot of rain but we all made it some wetter than others.
The last 2 days were spent visiting the turltes and orang sanctuary at Sepilok. We fly back to KK tommorow and on thursday I fly to Vietnam to start the next project a trip from vietnam into cambodia and ending in thailand where I will stay for 4 weeks.
I will try and add some pics next time.
So goodbye from Borneo and I will see you all in Thailand
