We have a stand in guides to help us around this area which has over 10,000 streets and lane ways. The Jewish quarter is alway situated close to the king's palaces as it is thought that Jewish people are very good our tawith economics and have for centuries been the king's consultant.
Once in the Madena our guide takes us firstly to a newer part to show us that the buildings are being put together the same way as the old part of the Madena. We then embark on a trek through narrow street , tunnels and door ways, all the time going deeper inside the quarter's walls. Cats are to seen everywhere with kittens in tow ,doors are in some places that small that even I have to bend down to get in . A few of the group ask would it be alright to venture here without a guide , the answer was yes but getting lost among the many streets was a very strong possibility.
One place we went to was Moroccan spice market ,the smell or should I say the aromatic in the air were amazing ,we continue on which leads us into the meat and poultry market all fresh ,all fine cuts of steak and sausages, the same with the chicken. Still walking we come across the clothes bazaar , small boxes filled with different apparel, shoes and copper cook ware.
Onward we walk ,this time we are taken to a weaving shop where these beautiful scarfs table runners and quilts are made by hand milling machines. From here we march to a leather tanning shop where are shown how the hair on a hide is removed leaving a pink coloured hide which after washing and drying they dropped into colour pots ,these are mostly natural occurring .
To me this was a very interesting day , just alone the way this area is constructed will alway stay with me ,how all the people can live so close together and of course the different trades and shops available to all the thousands who live here. Well tomorrow we move on from Fes .
See you soon I hope as offexploring is playing up again
