Weds. 21st. Oct.Broken Hill is a mining town and the place where BHP Billiton one os the biggest mining companies in the world started when the richest lode or seam of silver was discovered. It has already churned out $100 million and will go on for many more years. B.H. was also the home of one of Australia's most famous artists Pro Hart who died in 2006.We went to his gallery today and thought some of his work was like L S Lowry's but more colourful. We couldn't afford any of his paintings but we bought a few postcards to make up our own picture. The highlight of the day was a visit to Silverton about 25ks from B.H.Silverton has been the location for a number of Australian films including Mad Max and Pricilla Queen of the Desert. It has original buildings and is in a desolate setting. It is also now home to many artist who love the light and country. A short drive out of there is Mungi mungi plains with a lookout from where you can see so far you can see the curvature of the earth. We also went to the Living Desert and the Sculpture Symposium another of those places hard to describe so to quote the guide book " The Living Desert is a flora and fauna Sanctuary with a magnificent Sturt Pea display, Aboriginal history and contemporary pole work surrounded by an electronic fence to keep the feral cats and dogs out and allow the native animals to thrive."Unfortunately we went to it after we had seen the Sculptures and we couldn't face walking around anymore in the 34 degrees heat. The Sculptures comprise12 sandstone artworks which highlight the skyline all with a story to tell, located on a majestic hilltop the sculptures were completed in 1993 by artists from around the world.Very interesting but most of them are weird (that bit is not from the guide book ) We could have spent another day in the B.H. but we don't want to do a mine tour and we can't afford the art in the galleries so we are heading off tomorrow to White Cliffs an opal mining settlement where we shall be staying in an underground motel!!
