After spending the night in Copacabana we took a small ferry boat over to Isla del Sol. Sitting on the roof of the boat gave some incredible views of Lake Titicaca, views that would be put to shame once we arrived on the island.
We landed and climbed a stairwell built in 1500 BC, checked into our barebones hostel and wandered around the south of the island, which included the remains of an Incan temple and stunning views of the lake and the completely terraced island, topped off by the sun setting over the highest tip of the north part of the island.
After a great meal of Titicaca trout I got maybe 3 hours sleep due to the locals' all night fiesta, barking dogs, people yelling at the barking dogs, fire crackers going off right outside the door, and the bitter cold that forced me to put on every warm layer i had.
The next day we hiked 4 hours from the south to the north part of the island and enjoyed an almost unceasing stunning view around us.
After another boat ride back to Copacabana, Collin and I took a nightbus to Arequipa, Peru. During the ride we read in our tourist books that this was the most dangerous road in Peru and were strongly advised not to take it at night due to frequent crashes, baggage theft and problems with the busses and bus drivers. Our spirits shaken, we contined to read that the Bus station at Arequipa was notoriously dangerous and to beware of taxis that would drive tourists to back neighbourhoods and steal bank cards, etc. We did, however, make it safely to a hostel with the help of another backpacker and checked in at 530am - despite the fact the beds were obviously just recently vacated, we settled in for a few hours sleep.
Today we awoke to a beatiful warm day and ate lunch overlooking the main plaza, then went around the monastary st. Catalina (after checking in to a different hostel).
The night consisted of a bbq at the hostel and a few beers while listening to stories of other backpackers. All in all, a great day in South America.
