Saturday Wilpena PoundWhat a confusing and at one point bizarre day.The journey from Port Augusta was good with sealed roads all the way but once we got to the resort/camping ground the confusion started as we tried to find our spot (no 8).Then we couldn't locate the toilets and had to find our way back to the reception and start again. We finally settled in and tried to make any sense of the map of walks. They are supposed to start from the reception area but then they suggest you take a bus part of the way. Sat. nav Karen is no use at all in situations like this.It is definitely bush walking country and we soon decided to either do a scenic flight or a 4x4 trip.We opted for the flight at 9am tomorrow but the pilot has just called at the van to tell us they have double booked so now it is 9am. on Monday. We could have gone tomorrow afternoon but it seems the flight can be very bumpy in the afternoons and as neither of us are keen on small planes so we are willing to wait. Don't know what we will do tomorrow if we still can't make sense of the walks. The bizarre bit? When we telephoned to book we were told we had got the last site because there is a big event on this weekend.Turns out it is a black tie dinner in aid of the flying doctor service.Six hundred people have converged on the area for it and it is sold out.Anyway at 6pm from the tents and camper vans (not 4 star caravans )emerged these beautiful people in dinner suits, white shirts and black bow ties. The women were all in black, red or black/red long dresses. They were carrying champagne bottles and glasses and having pre dinner drinks parties. How they managed to appear so smart and tidy out of their dusty tents and 4 x 4 I shall never know. It was such a strange sight Joe asked a group of them if he could take a photo.Maybe it is a good thing we haven't to get up early in the morning if all this lot are going to come rolling back at 2am.
