Tuesday Berry Springs Nature ParkFirst stop was the Berry Springs a series of 3 swimming holes each with steps down and guess what? No swimming. We are told the very wet season had enabled the saltwater crocs (salties) to get over the gates which are at the end of the pools and are supposed to keep them out.Once they are in they have to be trapped and hopefully once they have got them all they can reopen the pools. Question is how do they know they have trapped them all? Idyllic spot and one you will have seen many times on TV and postcards. It sounds like the crocs are a real problem along with the brown snakes and other nasties.Today we were told such horror stories about the nasties we have definitely decided we could not live here.We then spent about 4 hrs at the Territory Wildlife Park.It was good and interesting but Dubbo Zoo is better.Tomorrow we continue the journey to Darwin probably stopping at the crocodile farm.We even have a croc enclosure on the van site.It is surrounded by a steel fence and strict instructions for guests not to go inside the enclosure. As if! We have found a website which shows which roads, swimming spots etc are closed so we shall look up Howard Springs Nature Park and if the swimming holes are open we shall call there. At the moment we are fighting a losing battle with mossies, moths and flying ants coming in the van.Joe has decided not to go to the shower block tonight and we shall lock the door and bunker down .Weds.On the road to Darwin. The springs are not open so we shall try again on the way back down.On the way out of the park we stopped at the croc enclosure and there were 2 freshies as we croc experts call the freshwater ones, sat just over the fence about 3 ft away good job we didn't see them last night we may have cancelled the booking. The croc farm was very good but only did feeding at 2pm and we didn't want to hang around but we saw a pen of year olds being cleaned and it was fascinating how these animals only about 18 inches long were having a go at the chap who was in the pen with them.He got the brush steel under their belly and kind of flipped them to one side luckily they only attacked him one at a time or he would have been in trouble. He said they come out of the egg aggressive. There are 100 young crocs in a pen and they stink with a very distinctive smell. We saw several big salties and no wonder they can catch people who just go near the waters edge. You can stare at the water and swear there is nothing then you see the snout and head coming up and even then you think it might be a log.Makes you shiver. We have booked on this site 10k from Darwin CBD for 5 nights. We have decided to go to Kakadu from here on a trip picking up at 7.30am and getting back at 7.30pm.It is a long trip but it does do the things we want to do there and if we feel we want to see more in Kakadu we can always drive down back through the park.We have also booked a jumping croc. Boat trip (you will have to wait to see the photos for that)Also a trip to the big twilight market and a dinner cruise around the harbour.
