So since writing we have walked (or rather breathlessly trekked) the Tongariro crossing; the views were well worth it, you could see from the East coast to the West! The crampons weren't a great success, after spending 20 minutes trying to put them on right (Joe having to get the guide to do up his) we wanted to get them off straight away. Although they were good for your grip they were heavy and I (D) found it worryingly easy to trip over; nice big cliffs either...
