I am a bit behind with my blog but I will wtell you about byron bay first. Byron bay is mainland austrlia's most easterly point. Home town of Paul hogan (crocodile dundee!!), olivia newton john and elle mcpherson who are all frequently spotted on the beach, it is a small, relaxed seaside town where the locals enjoy an alternative lifestyle. It has the best surf on the east coast and dolphins are often seen here in the water!
Byron bay is a very hippy town and the streets are filled with people with dreadlocks smoking weed and walking barefoot. Our hostel was pretty crappy and we shared with a load of swedish boys and our room leaked as it was raining! We went on a daytrip to ninbin on the 'happy bus' which was driven bya crazy ladsy and a guy with half a beard and only one eye brow! On the way to the pro-marijuana town of ninbim we stopped to look at the beautiful waterfall on the outer rim of an erupted volcano where koalsa rested in the trees. It was a very bumpy and steep ride up to the top and back down again! Ninbin was very colourful, i think it has been voted the most colourful town in oz and is only about 200m in length. The whole town circulates around legalising canabis and people sell it on the streets and sell cookies with hash in as well as giving out posters to legalise it. The town is often rioted though and anyone caught slling it to tourists is arrested. The odd hash cookie is overlooked though. Some people were openly smoking the stuff in bars. There was anice relaxed 'not a care in the world' feel about this place- not surprisingly!!
That night we drank some passion pop in our room with some nachos and played word games whilst talking to our roommates. The next day was pouriong with rain again, we looked round byron town then had a slice of tirimisu cake and a coffe by the water before deciding to make our way to the top of the hill where the lighthouse was in order to watch the sunset. We walked all the way to the top and saw sunset on the way which was beautiful and watched the remainder of the sun disappearing over the horizon as we sipped spme sparkling wine at the top and talked about our fave moments from travelling so far. The lighthouse was cool and was in full working order and we sat beneath it till it got dark. The walk home was scary as it was so dark and we couldnt see the road in front of us. A car started slowing down and asked usif we were ok and we just said yes and ran off. we made it back safley to town and sat by thew beach talking to some other tourists whom w eneded up going for drinks with and had a night out which was very fun and we didnt get home till 4am. it was fun as we didnt even plan it but we had to get up at 8 for our bus the next day!
Our bus took us to surf camp, i sat in the front with the driver and dj'ed for the rst of the bus. He teased me the whole weekend about various things but he was funn and i think he had a soft spot for me and gem as we gave as good as we got! On arrival at surf camp we got into our wetsuits and hit the beach for our surf lesson where we learned how to balance on the board and stand up during a wave, it was fun and we spent a while in the water. Afterwards i went for a lay down and noticed a tingling on my lip which by the time i had woken up was the size of a golf ball and my face was all distaughted. I looked awful like the elephant man. I also felt sick and dizzy and faint so the staff (who all looked shocked at my face and who happened to be hot aussie surfer dudes!) took me to hospital as they thought it could be a poisonous snake or spider and cos it was close to my respiritory organs. It turns out it wasnt as i didnt die! Had it been a box jellyfish i would have been dead in 15mins. I still dont know what it was but after a long wait in casualty i got some tablets which made me very drousy but made me look normal again! It was probably an allergic reaction or a jelly fish sting (i must have kissed it in the water!0 or maybe an insect. Alls well now though- scary though as i didnt know what had bitten me and i felt so far away from home at that moment!! I was brave though. I missed my free dinner at surf camp thoughthat was the worst thing of all haha.
We had breakfast the next day and rumour had gone round camp that a girl had died from a snake bite! So alll in all i didnt really enjoy surf camp as everytime i think of it i think of my face and the scary thought of what it was. Leraning to surf was hard but fun and i almost manage to stand up for a few seconds!
