Before we left cairns we had a seafood platter on the seafront it had oysters 9i hated them), mackerel, prawns and squid which was lovley- we thought we would have a proper meal before we start on the budget pot noodles!
We raced round trying to find our pick up point and everntually did we were worried as had to be there at 6.30 in the morn so glad we found it tongiht!
Today was our 1 month since we set off so our trip is almost a third of the way through! We caught the oz experience bus (it was 40 mins late even thoguh we got there at 6.20am and were sta on our rucksacks waiting with some other travelleres!) We stopped at boulders rainforrest on the way for a walk and learned of the old aborigianal tale of the 2 lovers that couldnt be together due to being from different tribes so she threw herself in the river after he went back to his tribe. Legnend has it her spirit is still there and that is why 14 people have died there recently as she is still bitter against men (all those that died were men!). Aboriginal men do not go there and it is a sacred place for women! I think those that died were just standning too close to the edge but hey! It was pretty strong the current! Saw a ginat black and yellow spider in its web, looked poisonous! Also you can pick the green ants off the trees and lick them they taste like lemon and limes! The drive was nice as we drove through the sugar cane fields and were close to the waterfall where the timotai shampoo advert was filmed 9the one where she flicks her hair in front of a waterfall!) We stopped at a small town called babinda, it looked like one of them towns from the horro movies in the outback where all the residents are redneck murderers haha. It is however the wettest town in austrailia and currently holds the golden gumboot award which sits proudly in the post office window! It did rain a lot on this journey but its sunny again now! We saw plenty of cane toads which are meant to eat the beatels from the sugar cane but instead they eat everything but and are a massive problem and eople hate them so go on massive killing sprees with golf clubs and basesball bats hitting them on the head- apparently they dont die easily though and even after a crack with a bat they hop off fine! Some people sneak them into thier shopping bags and freeze them in their freezers to kill them whilst others like to fatten them up on dog food and dress them up, putting lipstick on them keeping them as pets- oh dear god! They have some sort of hallucenagenic strip on their back so people lick them and get a drug rush- each to thier own! You wouldnt catch me licking a toad unless he turned into a prince!
Next we stopped at a crocodile farm where the crocs are bred so it was not and the owners were crazy like steve urwin, openeing the gates and letting the crocs come out and poking them with sticks to make them run at him- i was scared as they are my owrst animal in the world. They were jumping up to grab the meat in his hand, im surprised it didnt bite his hand off. Check the photos! There were 2 corcs called margaret and keith but keith was injured cos he tried to eye up margaret in the next section of water and margarets husband bit him- haha what are the chances. poor keith. I held a dragon lizzard, a big black cockatoo and most importanly A BABY SALTWATER CROCODILE! (it had its mouth taped so couldnt bite but still!) i was shaking in my boots!! My fave part was seeing the kangeroos which were roaming free and were quite tame. One had a baby joey in its pouch! i loved it!! I fed some of them from my hand and stratched heir heads- i am bringing one home to keep!!! We aslo found a tiny tiny cane toad on the grass it was the size of a smartie but a perfectly formed toad. We saw other aussie animals like the cassawary which is basically an emu but it likes to kick people and is very nosey so you are meant to hide behind a tree if you see one in the wild until they lose interwest as have small brains! We did see one in the wild as we passed the road on the bus actually! We arrived at the hostel we booked it on the bus and its lovely, a communal garden and kitchen with palm trees, shop and pool. Its very young person orientated and is a bit like being in the big brother house so the atmospehere is cool. The rooms are dorms though we are in a room of 8 which again is smaller than my bedroom at home but its just somewhere to crash i guess. We played volleyball in the pool and walked the plank across fully clothed- i made it to the other side without falling in luckily. We cooked pasta in the hostel kitchen to save on pennies as aussie is gonna be very harsh to my budget as we wanna do the main things like whitsunday island and frasier island. bye for now. ps CAN YOU BEIELVIE I HELD A CROC!!! im losing my nmind out here, ill be doing a skydive next... we watched the skydivers landing on the beach yesterday- it appeals but i think ill pass on that one. i hear there is snow in england- grr i love snow! xxx
