I think I've got the right spot on the map... but today we headed down almost as far south as you can go!!! The weather was beautiful and sunny, and there are just so many beautiful locations down here, you really get a sense of the enormous space there is here in New Zealand... and there is a definite sense/awareness of being at the bottom of the world too!! We had lots of stops today and Earl, our new driver, took us to a lighthouse on Nugget Point, were we saw seals (but no penguins or whales today) and then to Cannibal Beach were we saw a group of massive sea lions!!! We had to be careful they didnt chase us, but we got really close - check out the photos when I put them on..). We also walked to a waterfall at McLean Falls. Beautiful (although not sure why we went there, as everything else you look at in new Zealand is always 'the biggest' 'the oldest' 'the longest' 'the highest' 'the smallest' 'the steepest' etc, etc, etc... tee hee hee!!!
Then we went and did a walk to a beach where you can get paua. We even found some of the shells on the beach (they cost at least $10 normally in the shops), but you have to get them cleaned and polished if you want to take them out of the country, so I will have to leave my finds here with Roxanne!).
We then arrived Curio Bay and stayed at Dolphin Lodge in Porpoise Bay (no Hector's Dolphins about today though unfortunately - not quite the season yet, but apparantly in the summer they are always in the bay and will come up and swim with you!). We got do do a walk and were told about the health benifits of the flax plants (good as an insect repellant and also for excema) and we got to see one Yellow Eyes Penguin! Very rare, and there were only eight (possibly ten) in the colony were we were, so we were very lucky! Although some people went back later on and saw more....
A very active day!
