Joanna's Travels
Whoever called it the Gold Coast Resort was having a laugh.....
Had a great few days at Beachcomber by the way - the girls turned up and we had so much fun together: lying on the beach, snorkling, partying the night away with the swimmers, having cocktails on the beach etc, that I decided to cancel the trip that I had arranged - the Awesome Fiji Salty Seduction Trip (yes, the title sounds terrible - but you should check out the names of their other trips!! eg 'the ultimate lei'...) - and travel with them up to the northern Yasawa islands and then back dowbn to Manta Ray by myself on the way home (so no visit to Southsea Island or a stay on the Wanna Taki boat...)... which leads me to tell you about our trip to the island of Nanaya Lailai.....
Travelling with Dee, Theresa and Brid on the Yasawa Flyer (a boat) to get to the top of the Yasawa Islands was fun, met Steve who had also been in Beachcomber on the way; and we travelled up in style. We should have realised something was up though when the little boat that picked us up from the main boat to take us to the beach/place we were staying on the island of Nanuya, had to drop us off on the beach nearest to the boat (not the one we were staying at which was on the other side) as it was sitting too low in the water with the nine passnegers and all our bags, and we had to trek twenty minutes over the island to get to our 'Resort'!!! I use the word resort very loosly (alas they didnt) as when we stopped walking everyone thought it was a joke and that they were showing us the local Fijian village..... but no. We four girls and Steve were put in a 'dorm' room with three binkbeds, all of which were damp, and there was another guy already staying there who was no where to be seen, and the bathroom was just a little room that was seperated form the main room by a shower curtain.... a shower curtain is not sound proof, as you can imagine (or rather, you wouldnt!!) and there was no toilet paper, no sink, and the shower came straight form the sea - so it was pure salt water!!! Not very nice to wash your face in and we couldnt clean our teeth!! So we were all not best pleased with our new home, especially after coming from hot showers and lovely food at Beachcomber! In facty, we were all in shock while we ate the lunch they had provided for us - rice and cabbage - and as soon as it was over we trekked back accross the island to the lovely Nanuya Island Resort where the boat had dropped us off (near to The Blue Lagoon (yes, from the film)) to use th internet and phone there to try and get off the island of Nanuya Lailai as soon as goddam possible!!! We were able to book ourselves into the Oarsmans Bay Resort on neighbouring Nacula for the next two nights (we had mistakenly booked for THREE nights at the Gold Coast!!!), we had to wait until tuesday to go as the taxi boats had stopped ruinning, so we were stuck, but we booked one for 8am in the morning - we were desperate to leave!!!
All the other people staying at the Gold Coast seemed similarly unimpressed, but we all had to grin and bear it and after dinner we all managed to find some Fiji Beer at the neighbouring 'Resort', so all was well... we needed to have a drink to be able to sleep in the damp beds!
All great fun though and we got into the spirit of things... and made sure we were up early to catch the taxi boat... which didnt turn up so we had breakfast (a weird wet coconut bread concoction) and got your man from the Gold Coast to take us by boat to Oarsmans on Nacula. We also took Jane and Paul, a couple from Ireland with us, and made our way to what we hoped would be better times.....
next installment when I get to Auckland (am in Nadi at the moment (11.08.06) using up my remaioning internet time at the Skylodge before we go to spend the night at the Nadi Bay Resort Hotel)
