Hello everyone, this is our last day in Bangkok so we wanted to write about everything we have done here before we move onto Koh Tao.
After our trip to the Grand Palace we ventured across to China Town. This district of the city is probably the busiest place we have ever been in our lives. We were instantly engulfed by endless tunnels of markets and swarms of people. We didn't actually manage to take any pictures here because stopping to get the camera out of the bag would have put us directly in the way of about 3000 people.
On our way home we were greeted by the same nice salesman we had met on our first day. Now wise to his kind we ignored him and walked straight past.
The following day we experienced a more modern side of the city, far removed from the Temples and traditional sights. We travelled the length of our map on the taxi boat to the Central Pier, here we ascended the steps up to the Skytrain (a futuristic version of London's tube - much cleaner and more importantly air-conditoned.)This took us to the Siam Paragon, a modern shopping mall similar to The Trafford Centre or the Bullring. It was hard to remember we were still in Bangkok except for when you stepped out of the mall it was back to traditional Bangkok (especially the heat.) We also visited the MBK shopping centre which is a sharp contrast to the Paragon. It housed all the mobile phones, pirate DVD's, etc much like the night market stalls.
The next day we had the best breakfast yet! We awoke to scrambled eggs, waffles and natural yoghurt. As no rice was involved our plates were soon emptied!
We then visited the Golden Mount, a temple on top of a huge man-made hill, encircled by steps. On what felt like the hottest day yet it took ages (and a full bottle of water) to reach the top. From here we could see over the entire city. We then visited the Giant Swing, a rather underwhelming landmark that appeared to be neither giant or a swing.
The next stop on our busy day was Jim Thompson's house. This was a beautiful house once owned by the man who introduced Thai silks to the Fashion houses in both New York and the London. From here we took the boat back in the dark to see the skyline all lit up.
When we got back we met Thai students who are all training to work at the hotel. We found out that in Thai, the word 'Dan' means a 'dish,' a fact agreed by one of the young boys who at the time we had wrongly assumed had taken a shine to Jo!
On our penultimate night we had a lovely dinner in a highly recommended fish restaurant on the river front where our meals were swimming in large tanks when we had arrived.
Today we saw the strangest product (in UK terms) being advertised. A Vaseline moisturiser with added skin whitener - the Yin to Johnson's Holiday Skin's Yang!
Tonight we are getting the night bus over to Koh Tao and we will update you when we are certified scuba divers. x x x
