Day 8 we spent our day exploring Budapest. In the morning we went to the Hungarian parliament building which is absolutely massive. There are numerous statues there commemorating Hungarian heroes like Lajos Kossuth who began the uprising that would lead to a failed Hungarian Revolt in 1848. They don't seem to succeed but they always fight hard. The same can be said of the 1956 revolution. We went to see St. Matthias church which was beautiful inside and out. I've rarely seen a church painted so intricately. After some wandering around we had lunch and Then went to ride the children's railway. The Children's railway is a beautiful leftover from the Communist era. Children do everything but run the train in a boys scout-esque responsibility exercise. They train for 6 months before they work the train itself. It takes you to the highest point in Budapest. I didn't climb up but the view I did see was amazing. Our final stop of the day was the Szechnanyi Baths. Budapest is famous for their thermal spas. The Baths are an intricate architectural work of pre-WWI Austria. The Baths are nice as well. After the Baths half our group left so they could make their train to Vienna. At 4am the next day I said goodbye to the other half which came back to the states.
As a group leader (first time or otherwise) I couldn't have asked for a better dispositioned, mannered, or flexible group. They followed instructions, listened and were never late. They were a joy to explore Central Europe with.
