we just boarded 725 students...today was our move in in Nassau. pulled away from the port...had our first sea meetings. i honestly went through an emotional low from about 8am-1pm for some reason....some of the students turned me off a bit. it's seriously like a sorrority convention here. did i tell you our voyage is 73% women!!! "lower" number of SOC too....
anyway, my first sea meeting went really well. (btw...i have 80 residents). i really enjoy having the opportunity to talk to them about how to approach the community and inspire them w/ some perspective about this unique opportunity. I definitely get excited to connect w/ the very few students of color. I have two asian women from hawaii and the only two women from puerto rico in my sea. also have a hapa girl from japan. one ucsd white dude, and two black women. so, i'm looking forward to building the community. we aren't allowed to prop our doors at all...so it'll be a challenge. I think around 2-4 people blew chunks during our orientation meeting tonight after dinner....we were rocking a bit and cleary was affecting some folks.
this evening actually has some feel of normalcy if such a thing exists. been going to bed way too late..but tonight feels relaxing to have the move-in and the first meeting out of the way. You seriously can walk to anyone and ask about their story, or join random people at dinner and meet so many people and hear many stories
i love going out and just standing at the back decks of the ship..i seriously go out there w/ a perma-grin when i hear us cruising through the ocean waters and realize that I am on this immaculate cruiser....cutting through the atlantic ocean and around the world. I feel like i could sit out there forever, it's quite relaxing and a bit surreal.
btw....i DID get to watch the inauguration. we all watched it via satellite on the ship!
