Sydney so far . . .
Happy Christmas everyone! Feels so strange to be saying that as even though tomorrow is christmas eve it still doesnt really feel very christmassy over here. We've been in Sydney over a week now so feel I should really send another update on whats been going on -
We left Byron Bay before we all turned into fully fledged hippies and got the overnight greyhound straight to sydney. After all our fun so far on the east coast my budget couldnt really stretch to much else! Had hoped to get some sleep on the bus down, although the air conditioning had broken on full power so we were abosolutely freezing for the full 13 hours to sydney, no hope of any sleep!
Got to sydney and had booked into a hostel in an area called glebe just outside the city, turned out to be a lovely place and a really friendly hostel, me and cat met some good friends there who we will definately meet up with over xmas and new year, fel a bit of a shame to leave there after only 3 days.
Had a great time in sydney so far though, we all really love it here, it is such a gorgeous city and feel quite at home here already. As the pennies have started to run out me and cat have been quite proactive on the job hunt already, in the 1st 2 days we had already got ourselves tax numbers, opened an aussie bank account and written a first draft of a cv (which i have to add took us far too long and still doesnt sound great!!!). today we completed an rsa course (responsible service of alcohol) which you need to have in order to get a job in a bar or restaurant over here, very boring but at least its another job done (100% too, such geeks!). they take alcohol laws a lot more seriously over here and they definatly seem to be more strictly enforced - would you believe some bars in sydney don't even serve jager bombs as they think they encourage binge drinking - not sure how me and alex will cope!!!
have manged to get some sightseeing in too, spent a lovely day up by the opera house, harbour bridge and botanical gardens hunting for a good spot to watch the nye fireworks. weve seen some good places but are going to get there mega aerly to get a space ( we are thinking about 9am!!!). Also managed to see the olympic park the other day as cat needed to get to the medical centre to get a new space boot for her broken ankle! ended up in a very posh sports medical centre in the olympic village where all the athletes go. the boot looks quite funny but hopefully wont be on for much longer! Turns out we must be quite an accident prone bunch as danny has manged to fracture a rib while on a night out after a few drinks, am trying to be careful as i dont want to be the next!!!
after moving out of the hostel in glebe we moved into our apartment in darling harbour. we had cancelled our hostel places when we realised we could share an apartment between 5 of us for less than we would be paying to all stay in a hostel in kings cross (horrible area!). I hadn't really realised at the time that we were booking a 5 star serviced apartment and nearly had a heart attack when I actually saw it - it is gorgeous, more beautiful than a hotel!!! me, cat and alex screamed for about 10 minutes when we first walked in. not sure this is how backpackers are meant to live but never mind! have enjoyed my daily trip to the swimming pool, jacuzzi and sauna and think we will all find it pretty hard to go back to hostels and flat shares after this!! memeory has been full on my camera for a few days but will upload more pics soon to let you see what its like.
hopefully will have a job by the time of my next update (as sydney is actually quite expensive!), but quite looking forward to starting work and staying in the same place for a while, will be really good to get to know the city better, i love it already!
Really hope everyone has a lovely christmas and a great new years, i'll be thinking of you all!!! would be great to hear what people are up to and will try and call people over the holidays when i get a chance (time difference is rubbish over here!). Lots of love and all the best for 2009!!!!
