This trip is taking us to a new destination, Sri Lanka. We booked the trip through Oasis Travel in Queensland and a lovely lady called Lucy O'Neill. We left Melbourne in the early hours of the morning, flying business class with Air Asia. Their lay flat beds didn't quite lay flat but it was certainly more enjoyable than sitting in the back of the plane. After a few hours sleep we stopped at Kuala Lumpur before boarding another plane to Colombo. We were met by Deepthi who will be our driver for the next three weeks. The airport is some 35 km's North of Colombo so we didn't see the city as our destination is a little further north at a beachside village and somewhat tourist spot called Negombo. We are staying at a hotel called Jetwing Blue and have a room that looks out onto Palm trees and a wide beach. The temperature is about 30 degrees and our exchange rate is giving us about 100 rupee for a dollar.
After settling into our room we went for a walk along the main street looking for a supermarket and to check out the local restaurants. There are two small supermarkets close by but no one is selling alcohol today, I think it's because it's Sunday. We ate lunch at one of the local spots; fried rice for 650R and a chicken salad for 500R. Both were delicious. We walked back along the beach and spent the afternoon having a swim and relaxing under the palm trees. There was a lovely breeze to keep us cool. Tonight we'll find a local place to eat and then have an early night. Tomorrow morning we're off early to see the local fishing catch before a relaxing day by the pool.
