Hey there,
I'm sitting here feeling very flustered, an extremely long and super hot day here in the beautiful Solomon Islands.
Also a tad teary as today is the last day of program with the little kids at OMEX timber. Today we held an extra special program for the kiddies. We had songs, memory verses, drama, sports, prayer and a special scavenger hunt.
Today we started the day off with Jimmy attempting to say a prayer in Pidjin English - we had gotten the security guys to come and help us translate it. (The security guys patrol the base all night with torches - they hardly ever sleep!)
During the sports session, the kids were split into groups to play Newcombe, Poisonball and Kickball. A lot of the younger ones couldn't keep up with the older kids so they decided to go and climb the bush lime tree (which they're not allowed to do). Therefore, my job is to go after them and make sure they have something to keep them occupied so they won't climb the trees. I was feeling a little dehydrated so i got the kids to come down and play "roller" (rolling down a hill, then climbing up and rolling down again). They had way too much energy! I then led them on a follow the leader type activity around the base. We hopped, crawled, jumped, marched etc. They laughed throughout the whole thing.
We then had the scavenger hunt in which they had to go around the base and find certain items, some of the items included a dead gecko, dead cane toad and a bird feather. My group are currently up to the birds feather and from the corner of my eye i can see them in the chickens pen. eek! I ran over and found out that they were plucking feathers out of the chickens wing, poor thing!
Finding the dead cane toad was worse, the group leader, Vannessah found a live cane toad by the swamp trees so she picked it up from its hind legs and tried to put it in the plastic bag, i told her that it had to be dead so she ran to a stump and starting bashing the poor thing until guts started coming out from its mouth. I felt kinda sick just watching it, because the cane toad didn't die from this. It died when the girls took turns jumping on and off its limp body. Feeling disgusted.
They offered to do the same with the gecko but i refused to let them, my team won anyway, after all that, they deserved it!!!
We then said a quick goodbye to the kids and promised that we will come next door to visit them either tonight or tomorrow.
Our group (minus Pastor and Cheng) then went to Bethesda disability centre in the big blue truck. The boys went there to help move planks of wood but since, Yumin and i couldn't lift them, we helped out with the smaller planks, took some photos for Pastor and also went to check out the place (this is where we'll be holding next weeks program)!
Feeling the sunburn now! My shoulders burn!! So decided to hop on the ute, to cool down at the beach. The little OMEX kids saw our ute drive past so they all hopped in too haha!
Also, I think the lack of activities to do at night has slowly caught up to us. That night, the boys tried to touch their elbows with their tongue and they got Kevin to show them how to catch a gecko with a home-made broomstick. So sickening! (btw, i'm standing on the table) as the boys catch them and throw them outside. Boys will be boys!
missing home but loving the islands, jo xox.
