Hello from Sukothai!
Had a great few days, not least because I got to talk to everyone I am missing on Skype face to face for the first time in yonks! Though it did make me miss all of you more... damn you! This blog is about my last night in Bangkok, my two day trip to Kanchanaburi and my trip today to Sukothai... so fun filled stuff. Though I have told most of you what I have been up to anyway... so to be honest, this is probably not that interesting!
p.s. Mum look at the photos of Bangkok on facebook, its all the internet would let me load, but I will get em on here as soon as poss along with the more cultural photos of Kanchanaburi!
April 4th continued- our evening out with the lads
Had a great night out in Khao San with Horsley, Bridgy and Gregory. After a rather nasty hangover, I was not really up for more drinking, but with Horsley chanting 'You wanna be a marine... then how are you gonna get there without hardened liqour...' continuously (god knows what he was on about... but with a bucket shoved in my hand I was quickly pursueded!)
Anyway, we then commenced with some good old fashioned drinking games. Gotta love em... but with bridgy and horsley stuggling to understand even the most basic of games, we ended up playing the epic (if not slightly easy) game of 'A frog jumped over a log'. We did not make it round the cirlce more than three times without one of the boys mucking up! I swear that mum's nursery kids could of grasped the concept!
Now well and truly giggly, Gregory took Amos and I, plus the boys, to one of the renowed 'Thai Ping Pong Shows'. Me, being ever so slightly naive, thought that when the tuk tuk drivers kept saying ping pong, they meant it was a table tennis show.... NO NO! Nick quickly informed me it was a much different sport, and I have to say I was not that into it.... thank god eh Liam!
Anyway, followed up with a bit of dancing, we had a great night and was awesome to see the guys, who coincidently are gonna be in Laos with us too!!
April 5th- Travel to Kanchanaburi
After a slightly heavy night I could barely open my eyes when my alarm went off at 6 am. We had to get the early bus to Kanchanaburi and neither Amos nor I were pretty sights tbh! We luckily made it there in the nick of time, and slept the whole way!
We then rather groggily walked/floated around the Floating Market, that was beautifully colourful and really interesting. Its and huge market based upon small canals, with food, clothes, jewellery and all sorts of stuff being sold. Was very interesting.
Then we visited the war memorial, where thousands of POWs were commemorated. It was so touching and sad to see fathers, husbands and boys commerated by their loved ones, having undergone such terror and maltreatment. I found it a very heart rendering experience.
As we did not want to do the Tiger Sanctuary, we were then dropped at our hotel in the early afternoon and slept all the way through until 6pm!! When Amos woke up it was hilarious- our conversation
Amos- 'What are we doing today?'
Me- 'Its 6, we are eating soon'
Amos- 'What.....?'
Me- 'We slept all afternoon'
Amos- 'but what are we doing TODAY?!'
Me- 'What are you on about?'
To which she lay back down and fell asleep... she apparently thought we had slept all night and it was morning!! Crazy chicken!
We slept well in a great little hotel which was built on a raft on the river kwai, it had stunning views! However, every time a speed boat passed it did make us a tad motion sick!
April 6th- Hectic day in Kanchanaburi
We were picked up by another tour operator and taken with a new bunch of people to the Jearth Museum and the Bridge over the River Kwai. It was really interesting to learn about the railway and the horrific treatment of the prisoners by the japanese, who seemed to be ruthless. The bridge offered a great view of the river and was scarily thin... particualrly when rather butch Thai women come at you almost with a 'chicken' like attitude and you have to hastily step off the tracks onto a beam of the bridge!! Not advisable for people suffering vertigo!
After the museum and bridge we rode the death railway. Sara and I got advised to sit on the entrance doors of the train for better views, but it was a tad scary being 1 step away from such a collosal drop.... not a good day for heights. Got some great views from the wooden bridge though and had a whale of a time!
We then went all natural (not literally...) and visited the Eragon falls (I think thats the name of a character in Lord of the rings... which is kinda funny!) They were gorgeous and it was a relief to get in some water after the humidity and heat had made me all grotty! We got in the waterfall proper job, no messing!
Then we went to ride the elephants which was a goof experience, if a little sad on the part of the elephant as the trek was very boring for them and they were obviously not as welll kept as one would hope. I think that the camels were more comfy than the elephants, but Sara disagreed... I think horse riding paid off a bit with the camels, as her thighs were in bits the next day. Elehpants were very rocky. All the same they are one of the best animals... they have the best bums ever... just HUGE!
We then made our way back to bangkok, slightly damp from the waterfall still, and enjoyed chatting to a girl called Becky from London who is doing a simular trip to us, and we are meeting her again in Chiang Mai which is fun. After chatting with everyone on skype I got a pretty poor nights sleep due to a combination of loud bars, a howling dog and some stupid ass cockrel crowing at 3 am.... stupid thing, it wasnt even dawn!
April 7th- Journey to Sukothai
Had another early start today!! 5.45 am.... fun times.... and to add insult to injury I tried uploading photos, was half way through and had to leave to catch the train uuurrrrggghh! The train was possibly the most bumpy ride of my life, kinda like an old rollercoaster or a virtual ride. Just got thrown about the place, but arrived 6 hours later to embark a 2hour bus to Sukothai! It was all worth it though as the hostel we chose out of lonely planet is great, its called 'J and J' and has the best coconut shakes... scrummy! We met 2 french guys who gave us tons of advice about Chiang Mai, and now I am all excited about that!
Tomorrow we do Sukothai, so will update you with all the cheeky Wats and such like...
Missing you terribly.... lovely to chat to you all xxxxxxxxxxxx
