Me encanta Buenos Aires!!
I went to Buenos Aires with a small group of students September 10th-September 15th. Samantha and Josh are friends that are also from the University of Minnesota. Mike is from Colorado. Emma is from New Hampshire and of course there was Heidi and me. The bus ride took 26 HOURS....but it wasn't as bad as it sounds; I slept most of the way and we were given food on the bus. Our ride was almost worth the trip as well; We passed through the Andes Mountains and they were covered in snow, very beautiful to look at.
My first impression of Buenos Aires was that it is huge. It took us about an hour to figure out on our map where our hostal was. The city is divided into neighborhoods and our hostal was located in San Telmo, an older bohemian neighborhood. The hostal was called "The Art Factory Hostal" and each room was decorated by a different graffiti artist. The staff was really nice and they organized cool stuff for us to do at night. The first night we signed up for an all you can eat BBQ. In Argentina they are called "asados" and they have them everywhere because the meat in Argentina is AMAZING, it's so tender and seasoned perfectly. We had beef, chicken, and I even tried blood sausage after the Scottish couple next to me convinced me to try it. I drank wine and ate until I couldn't eat anymore and met people from Scotland, Britain, Denmark, Venezuela, South Africa...I went to bed happy.
With our next few days we did a lot of walking around and exploring. Surprisingly, Buenos Aires has some really beautiful parks and squares with trees that are so big you'd think they were from a fairytale. We spent an afternoon in the botanical garden and it was really relaxing. Another day we visited the famous cemetary in Recoleta (a different neighborhood) where all of Argentina's important historical figures are buried, including Evita or Eva Peron...or to me, that chick Madonna played in that one movie. The second night we stayed in the hostal bar to listen to a band they hired and mingled with people. One of the hostal owners did an uncanny performance of the ending scene in Titanic where Kate Winslet is on the door and Jack sinks to the bottom of the ocean. It was a fun night.
Every Sunday in San Telmo (the neighborhood where we stayed) there is an antique fair. We visited that during the morning and it made me think of Grandma and Grandpa Rometti..they would have been in heaven with all the old treasures. The girls and I spent the afternoon shopping on the main drag, Calle Florida. I only bought a neckalce because I'm cheap but there was a lot to look at. At night we went to a bar called "the Red door" becuase it has a red door and we drank tequila and went to bed happy.
Monday was Emma's birthday. We went next door to a bakery and bought her a piece of cheescake. Everything looked so delicious that we decided to buy something for ourselves too. Josh and I shared a Ricotta torte with strawberries on top and since we are both italian we loved it. I slept through our last night becuase I was exhausted.
Tuesday we walked around a bit and then got on the bus to head back to Chile. I wasn't ready to leave because I love Buenos Aires. Only a 20 hour bus ride on the way back. I had a few days of rest and then celebrated Chile's Independence day the following weekend.
