So after spending a spending a day and a night squashed in cars and hotel rooms with my parents, the prospect of spending 16 1/2 hours on a plane was not appealing. However, it was probably the most comfortable flight ever with plenty of food (and if anyone knows me then plane food is all that I care about when flying).
Arriving in Bangkok was definitly an experience, I swear to god I saw my first ladyboy at the airport- but I'm not sure. But then she was with a middle-aged balding man so I went with the decision that she was a ladyboy. James the tourguide for my first week picked me up and then slowly other backpackers started trickling throughout the next couple of days.
The weather has been very humid here, occassionally it will rain for about 20 minutes but then will get back to its normal heat after. It is stupid how cheap everything is here. Today we had a plate of Pad-Thai, 3 cokes and chips for 180BHT - Which is about 2 pound 50. I paid 4 pound for a 40 minute taxi to the market earlier and 7p for a bottle of water. The food is amazing though, I can see me putting on about 2 stone the next couple days I'm here as its like having a chinese/indian takeaway everynight.
Bangkok is a death trap. The locals do not care for road lanes and just swerve in and out of each other, zebra crossings mean jack and the only way to cross any road is to literally run out, close your eyes, and scream to hopefully reach the otherside. The first night was spent exploring the infamous Khao San road. The busiest street with stalls, bars, food, everything. We got some buckets of some sort of cocktail, towers of beer with taps so you can just pour your own and shisha. This then led to a club - obviously. It would be fair to assume that I was a mess the next morning so to get over the night before's antics we just went took a tour around Bangkok's shopping mall and watched The Hangover 2 to make us all feel a bit better.
The second night we ended up on the Khao San road again where we followed the day up with pretty much the same as the night before, nearly going to a Ping-Pong show (guess). Today we decided to take a trip to the weekend market. Massive!! Selling all sorts of weird and wonderful things. Bunnies in little dresses, monkeys, and strange food. As I was shattered I was too scared to try the food but I will definitly be trying the fried cockroaches and crickets soon.
The following few days in Bangkok were manic. The days were spent on the cultural side, visiting temples and the Grand Palace which were beautiful. We took a river cruise through Bangkok to see the locals living in in floating houses that looked like they were about to subside. Instead of ducks, Thailand have river dragons in their lakes and rivers that are huge and look like they could attack you at anytime. To get back from the Temples and Grand Palace we took Tuk Tuks. These were worse than fairground rides and at every corner you had to hold yourself in so not to fall out into the road - the more you screamed, the faster the driver went - laughinh. I would def do it again though.
The nights were mainly held on the Khao San Road and followed much of the same pattern as before. After the 5 days, I was definitly ready to leave Bangkok if not just for the need to get into the sea. I loved it however, and will be back :)
