TK: today was a free day, and most of the group went on an excursion to ride elephants. The rest of us (Jess, Victoria, Jules and I) planned to hire mountain bikes and go exploring. Unfortunately Jess had food poisoning, so took it easy and stayed behind. The three of us cycled to the tad se waterfalls, 13kms from the city. Once we got there we saw some elephants and were able to pet them, they are such gentle creatures for their size. We then trekked up river passing various smaller falls until we reached this small piece of paradise, a clearing with dappled light falling on a series of turquoise blue plunge pools with clear river water cascading over 6m high walls of rock all surrounded by tropical plants, and there was no one there! Funnily enough it seemed like a real version of a fun pool in a leisure centre, without the chlorine and screaming kids! When we got back we went to a Lao cookery class, where we learned to make four traditional dishes, which we then ate round a large table with the other students. If we can source the ingredients back home we will definitely try them again
