So our night in Queenstown we managed to meet up with the Irish girls for a cup of tea and cake. Then we had a wander around Queenstown which is a nice little ski town and we rang mum and dad which was nice as we've not spoken to them since the end of June when we were in Thailand - bad daughters! We then went to the much raved about Ferg Burger which was nice but neither Vic or I could finish the burgers. We then walked back to the van and as we reached the carpark we realised the attendant was there writing us a ticket so we ran over and thankfully she let us off :) we then drove for about an hour south as neither of us were ready to go to bed as we felt so full from the burgers, and it was taking time off our journey on the way to Milford sound. We got to a motor camp at Kingston and stayed the night there, then we were up early again as we knew we had a long drive ahead to Milford. We set off from the campsite about 8 and got to Milford without any hiccups - thankfully we didnt need snow chains as we had been warned about - about 11.30am and booked ourselves on a cruise for 1.15pm so we had some lunch and faffed about and had a bit of a read before we got on the boat.
The boat took us all the way down the sound to where it opens out to the Tasman sea, it was really cold, but the waterfalls and the scenery made it worthwhile and we got to see sea-lions too on the rocks.
We got off the boat about 3pm and started straight back on our way back north. We got up to Cromwell which is a bit further on than Queenstown before we found a campsite for the night.
Yesterday we left Cromwell about 9.30am and drove up to the Glaciers and we stopped at Franz Josef as this is the one we wanted to climb so we booked in for the afternoon half day hike and then went to the campsite, had a game of scrabble and then cooked dinner and then went to bed - seriously we are sleeping so much as theres nothing else to do really in the evenings and its sooo cold snuggling in bed is so much more appealing!
Today we had a lie in as we didnt have anything to get up as we didnt drive anywhere today - yay! We met at 12.30pm to get kitted out for the hike and then we set off, i dont know if you can tell from the pictures but as soon as we set foot on the glacier it started to pour down so we were all soaking but i was fairly warm from the walking only my hands were freezing really, although once we stopped walking i got cold pretty fast. The ice formations and especially the blue ice was a cool sight!! JUST A PITY IT WASNT NICER WEATHER.
We got off the glacier at about 5pm and came back to the same campsite as last night and are currently doing our laundry while on the internet.
A big congratulations to Pete and Nic today hope everything goes smoothly and is really special for you!!
We're off back over to Christchurch tomorrow so a full day of driving i think, but we've had our fresh air quota today so a day in a warm car tomorrow is appealing now!
