This morning we got up super duper early, 8:30, and cleaned up the house and readied ourselves for another long drive. After the house was deemed packed up and 'sort of cleaned' we headed over to say our goodbyes to Steph and the kids. We got some last minute photos and even Lyon Wolf jumped in to get a snugly hug and kiss from all the kids to pass on to great gran :) It's hard, each time, to say goodbye to the kids. But each time we see them and the time we are able to spend with them is so special and treasured.
Blowing kisses and beeping the horn goodbye we were on our way.
5hrs in the car, with a temperamental nav-man, 2 audio CDs later (City of Bones, worth a read or a good listen. It's seriously worth it (coming from a book-aholic)) we finally arrived at Mt Gambier. When first coming into the town we were amazed by how big the place actually was. It's really beautiful and is definitely a tourist must!
Earlier, when we told gran where we were staying she told us that we should go and look at the blue lake. At this point Jen and I looked at each other and said aren't all lakes blue?! Obviously not. This lake was amazing! It is the most sapphire blue, and just absolutely breath taking.
As we read the information signs we came to realize that this lake had formed in the crater of a dormant volcano that had erupted 4000-5000 years ago! We also learnt that the colour did not only remain blue that in a certain space of months the colour of the lake would turn from blue to gray and then back. While, admiring the sites we followed on many trails that lead to lookouts, Jen and I became reminded of the Wizard of Oz and began singing "lions and tiger and bears, oh my!" And also, "we're off to see the wizard". When we began to become aware that others may find our singing and skipping strange we stopped to take some photos of the lake, ourselves (selfie!) and also of Lyon. Again we were stopped and asked about the reasons why we had the bear. While I turned slightly red, Jen explained what it was for without batting an eyelid.
After our adventure we came back to the hotel and while I relaxed in the one person spa with my book Jen sat on the lounge and caught up with the happenings of Facebook and all other things on her phone. (We're exciting, we know).
We would have loved to stay here a little bit longer but tomorrow we up and leave to drive, again, and head to Melbourne.
