We arrived at the jetty in Georgetown not really knowing what to expect, coming from an island that was a popular Malaysian holiday destination we knew it would be different to what we had already experienced! Coming out of the ferry port we were met by huge white british colonial buildings, a short drive to our hostel introduced us to a rainbow affect of different buildings, we could instantly see it was a real odd mix of culture. Our hostel was ideally located in china town down a narrow road off from a cross section, there didn't appear to be much going on down our street, it was quiet, there was just a row of similar Chinese style buildings, plain fronts but they all seemed to have dog bone shaped upper windows 'were still trying to work that one out'...it was like nothing we had seen before, it had a quirkiness and something that we loved!! The hostel had only been opened a few weeks and you can see everything looked fresh and new, we collapsed in our room, this comprised of a double bed and a table that was floating off the wall, didn't look like it would hang for long, especially after Jen got her crap on it!!ha!...and no window!....this wasn't good, we felt pretty isolated and boxed in!! The day we arrived the Euro's started so Matt had in mind to catch the opening game, this just meant waiting up till 12 and also finding somewhere that showed it, our hostel had a tv but they said it was being repaired and should be good for the following night. Jen wasn't too keen in stopping up especially after spending the day traveling 'it takes it out of you ya know'....so matt went off through the narrow like back streets to find the game....ay just round the corner of our street was reggae mansion and some huge 42'' tv's.....a tired matt and a few beers later matt tumbled to bed. The next morning we woke....huh...12 o'clock...s*** that was a good sleep!!...we realized that with no natural light we was screwed when trying to wake up!!....and we missed breakfast!!! Grrr!! We decided to make the most of what was left of the day and took a wander.... We had picked up a pile of pamphlets as per usual that gave us an idea of the area... Map, places to eat, things to do, and places to see!!....it just so happened that Georgetown had it all to do, see and eat. The hawker food had been highlighted as some of the best in Malaysia.... winning awards in the process.... and there was a huge number of heritage sites that where dotted all over the local map. The best way to see everything was to just do your own walking tour..... So we was off.... Museum... Chinese temple.... Government building .....church .....mansion.....more temples ......mosque.....fort.....monument .....more temples....over 2 days we saw it all getting templed out in the process!! .....you should watch Jens face even if you mention the word 'temple'...it's sight to behold!!.... It was an awesome experience just walking the streets checking out the different architecture, finding out the different people who had resided there and how it had come to be so multicultural.... every street we walked you could see such a difference in the way people lived, ate, and worked! Going from the coast seeing the dock yard to a British banking/ shopping area to little India with their nasi kandar's then onto china town through there narrow streets down to the komtar 'a huge multi story shopping complex'.... There was just so much to take in and marvel at!! It didn't take long before we checked out the food fusion.... They had maps that told you the must try food and pin pointed where to find it!....just up the road from our hostel was a food court serving just about anything, tandoori chicken... Duck rice.... Fried oyster omlette.... Char koay teow.... Fried ice cream....chicken biryani... these are just some of the delights we tried, it was soo cheap too!! Matt got into abit of a habit with the football, by this point the tv was sorted in our hostel....it got him creeping into bed at stupid times in the morning.... meeting a few football fans in the process!! Once we knew to put an alarm on we made the most of breakfast... wooo English tea!!!...we nearly forgot how good it is!!....Matt discovered a new breakfast love....peanut butter and jam on toast!..oh yes!!...it beats Jens marmite for sure!!ha ha!! The komtar was within walking distance as was most things of interest.... It was fairly frustrating whenever we would come across huge shopping malls as there would always be clothes or technology that would catch our eye, always at a cheap price!!...we had to hold back temptation!....the good thing about the malls was they usually had a cinema!!....as they were fairly cheap this was something to take advantage of!!...we watched Men in Black!...there was no standing this time for the national anthem!!....another good thing was there was hardly any trailers!!....straight into the action!! The hawker 'street' food was available pretty much anytime along pretty much any street throughout china town and lil India.... Cheap, quick, n tasty...what more could you want...the Mee Goreng was simply unreal.... It was a Chinese Indian fusion with noodles, meat, veg with a spicy kick!! ....wow it's a must try! The night of the England game we thought we would check out upper Penang road which we thought was more likely to have an atmosphere.... It was where the majority of the bars were, not that there was much of a drinking scene here, this was down to the main religion being muselim. It didn't get as busy as you would have expected for the game, we sat outside drinking a jug of beer, tv's surrounding us in the warm heat so nothing to complain about.....at least we could get instance service, not like you would of got back home!!....a draw...it could have been worse ey!!....the following day we somehow managed to make breakfast....we ate breafast down in the bar/ reception/ chill out area.... It had a bright n airy like courtyard layout...birds would fly in and get trapped not knowing there was only one way in!! The staff were friendly and would help providing info on the area.... Whilst back in langkawi our friends we met recommended checking out Penang hill for the amazing views n sunsets!....thinking this was something that could not be missed and with some travel info from the staff we headed down to the komtar to catch the local bus! We spent a good 20 mins driving up in and out of small estates so different to the city, after a while of not knowing where we were we thought we may have missed our stop....but no it was the last stop.... We were standing at the bottom of the funicular train station!! For what seemed like a small fortune we had 2 return tickets.... we was soon heading to the top.... It was like the train was heading vertically...more like we were crammed into a lift!! When we got off within seconds we were overlooking the city.... It was pretty impressive!! We walked up to find a run down mosque which seemed to be the only other thing to checkout.... We noticed a sign which was counting the distance to some attraction, there was also people walking back down a curvy road and golf carts heading up in the same direction.....we added all that up and thought there had to be some thing epic up there!!...after a 10 min walk we arrived at a couple of viewing stations, this seemed to be the first stop of point for the golf carts!...but from there they continued up the road out of sight!!....hmmm do we continue or should we head back??!..... After a few minutes of umming and rrring and a declined invitation to get a lift with a cart we decided to continue the walk along the road..... We presumed that there had to be something totally mind blowing it would be worth the walk...... 20 mins and 6 or 7 golf carts later......nothing?!....hmmm....oh the attraction turn out to be a flower show....that cost for entrance 'a huge no go'..... we walked and walked.... Still seeing these golf carts fly past us....our curiosity getting the better of us!!....another 10 mins....arrhh....a rope bridge entrance....wow...that's looks exciting.....ohhh it's closed!!.....huh....why are these golf carts still going past us?! Grrrr!!....we decided to keep moving.....look that ones turning around down there!!!.... I think we have reached the end!!...oh oh it's a sign!!.....and a muddy track....'south side viewing trail'....grr....arghhh what!!.... We decided to get an amazing photo of the sign and headed back!!.... We was knackered, disappointed, thirsty, but it had been a good walk.... parts of the way we could have been going down an English country lane.... British inspired cottages with hedges and wooden gates....it was really odd!! We eventually got back and by this time it wasn't quite sunset so rather than hang about and make another dodgy decision we got the train back down. Yes you could of guessed it as soon as we hit the bottom....a breath taking sunset lowered into night....at least from what we could see.....grr!! We headed back to town...getting a lil peckish we smashed off a feast from a nasi kandar....we tried a national favorite the roti canai 'light fluffy Indian flatbread' pretty good to dip into your curry sauce!! This was to be our last meal in Georgetown as the next day we was heading for KL. We had originally decided to catch the train down to KL but with the coach trip strangely quicker and cheaper we booked that..... we lugged our bags across town and through Georgetown for the last time.... to our pleasant surprise the coach was a luxury first class beast!!....fully reclining seats with foot rest... 3 seats per row so plenty of room!!....wow!!....Malaysia knows how to travel!!....we had an awesome 5 hour trip down into KL....with snackages to keep us going!! Georgetown had been a massive eye opener and something that we had both really enjoyed!! It's somewhere that would be a must see, Malaysia was beginning to be surprisingly interesting, cultural, and friendly..... We was looking forward to see more!!
