We are back in Australia after 3 fantastic weeks in New Zealand. In the North Island we visited the country's capital Wellington and met up with our friend Jolene who had previously been in England for two years and worked with Jenny which was great fun and nice to catch up with a familiar face. We spent some time in Taupo which was a pretty little town on a lake. We also stopped in Rotorua where there were thermal mud pools. Watching the mud bubbling up through the ground was impressive. On the way to Auckland we stopped for lunch in Matamata which is also known as Hobbiton where many of the farms were used in the filming of Lord of the Rings but unfortunately due to copyright laws they weren'tallowed to keep them the same. We had a few days in Auckland and went on a day trip to Paihia and the Bay of Islands. We went for a walk along the coast which was nice but sadly we had chosen the wrong day with the weather.
On the 1st of December we flew to Adelaide via Melbourne with no tanoy announcements this time! It really doesn't seem like December here because the sun is shining in such clear blue skies! We went on a 2 day trip to Kangaroo Island and were shocked with how much was packed in. On our first day we saw dolphins surfing on Pennington Bay and visited the interesting Emu Ridge Eucalyptus Distillary where we learnt about the variety of uses for eucalyptus oil. We walked amongst the sealions on Seal Bay which was a very rare experience. Little Sahara was next where we had a fantastic view from the top of the sand dunes. Lastly we had fun spotting koalas up the trees at Hanson Bay Sanctuary. We spent the night on a farm and went on a nocturnal walk where we saw kangaroos, walabies and a possum.
The following morning Dave our tour guide showed us where a controlled burn off had got out of control, they were very lucky that the wind changed direction and stopped it spreading further. We then headed to the Remarkable Rocks in Flinders Chase National Park (shown in the picture) which intrigued us as to how they had been eroded into such weird and wonderful shapes. We then went to our seventh seal colony of our trip so far at Cape de Couedic. Our last stop was Hanson Bay the most beautiful beach we had ever seen, crystal clear water and untouched white sand. We felt like we were in the Carribean. By the time we got back to our hostel we were shattered!
Today we went to Haighs Chocolate Factory apparently the best chocolate in Adelaide. We watched the people working and got a free snowman chocolate which was yummy! Tomorrow at 6.05am we begin our Oz Experience heading towards Melbourne on the Great Ocean Road.
