Hello everyone!
Our six days spent in Perth were very relaxing after the long days of the safari, we didn't really do too much, mainly just caught up on sleep! On the tuesday we walked upto Kings Park which gave us a fantastic view over Perth and the harbour.
On our way to New Zealand we had to change flights at Melbourne and as we were sat waiting to board our plane we heard over the loudspeaker..."can passengers Jenny Clarke and Rebecca Holmes please come to gate 7" which freaked us out! It turned out that it was only because we had to get new boarding passes as we were an international connecting flight.
Since we've been here we've travelled from Christchurch down the west coast to Queenstown and seen alot of amazing scenery along the way, huge snow-capped mountains and beautiful clear lakes. As we left Westport we walked along the coastline to Cape Foulwind where we saw a few seals sunbathing on the rocks. We then drove a bit longer to Punakaiki and looked at the pancake rocks which were impressive. That evening we stayed near Lake Mahinapua at an old west coast pub owned by 82yr old Uncle Les, the oldest publican in NZ. We had a christmas themed fancy dress party which was great fun!
The following morning we were off to franz Josef, the fastest moving glacier in the world, and on the way we stopped at a bushmen museum where we learned about their old deer hunting skills. We watched a short film which really made us laugh when it showed footage of men jumping out of helicopters and landing on the deer! Couldn't believe it at first! We stayed in Franz Josef for a couple of nights and on our last morning we travelled to the Fox Glacier and decided it'd be a good idea to jump out of a plane at 12000ft! We had a 15 minute scenic flight around Mt Cook & Mt Tasman above the Tasman sea which was an awesome view, before free-falling for 45 seconds at 120mph, sweet as!!
Famous skydiving quote which is so true..."those who haven't, don't understand and those who have, can't explain"
Then we headed to Wanaka, stopping at Thunder Creek falls on the way and also the Blue Pools where Becky was fascinated by how clear the water was. Bryan, Diesel & Darren jumped off of the rocks and into the pools, they looked very cold as they got out!
Before we headed to Queenstown we visited PuzzlingWorld where we got bored off the maze after 20 minutes and Jenny wanted to cheat by climbing over the fence to get out! About 20 minutes from Queenstown we stopped at the kawarua bridge where we learned about the history of bungy jumping and watched a few people actually do it! One guy got fully dunked in the water, looked fun but quite scary!
We spent 4 nights in Queenstown and on the saturday we had a day trip to Milford Sound, a fiord created where a glacier carved through the rock and then retreated to leave a massive trench, 22km long, which the ocean then filled in. We felt so tiny surrounded by giant mountains and saw some cute little penguins and fur seals.
Back to Christchurch tomorrow and then we start our journey up through the north island.
Hope you are all keeping well and enjoyed looking through our photos from africa, hopefully put some more on soon.
