Anyone for pippies?..
Where's your Maroons Darl?!
Had a fantastic 5 days over at the island! Was an amazing place and so glad I visited this unspoilt and beautiful gem! The weather was grand and I even managed to squeeze in some scuba diving whilst there! The waters here?were a tad cooler than the warm "bath water" of Thailand but the marine life?was stunning. We did 2 early morning dives and saw loads of sharks, rays, octopus?and some Woobegome sharks which I had never seen before -Huge creatures with funny whiskers coming from their mouths.....Beginning the dive was pretty amusing as we had on 10mm neoprene wetsuits and I had 7 weights on my weight belt. I'm not used to wearing a wetsuit after Thailand and having to wear 7 weights on my belt was pretty hard to carry! We dived 2 sites one called the Nursery (as it has loads of baby sharks there) and another called Shag rock----Interpret that how you like!!!!
While I was on the island there was a huge State of Origins rugby game on. Queensland were playing New South Wales and the whole of the island was getting ready for the game! On the way to the shop I was shouted at a least?10 times to get my Queensland rugby top on! One man drove past in his van and yelled out "Where's your maroons darl, get them on!".(The QLD top is maroon in colour and maroons is one of their nick names!)?
After a few days of admiring the stunning beaches and the wildlife we went on a 4WD tour of the island. Had a great day and Ryan our guide showed us loads of interesting stuff! He took us to Long beach which was completely deserted and defiantly one of my favorite beaches. It had powdery white sand and the only noise you could hear was the huge waves crashing on the sand or the occasional 4WD drive on past. We stopped to soak up the scenery and Ryan showed us how to collect pippies. These pippies are great I tell you! There abit like mussels or oysters and we managed to collect enough to take back for the BBQ! Had a pippie race to see which could dig themselves into the sand first.
After the excitement of the pippies we went to Brown Lake which is a lot better than it sounds. This lake was tucked away in the center of the island and surrounded by trees and plants. The lake got its name because the tea tree oil from the surrounding trees had seeped into the lake and made it brown. We all had a great soak in the tea tree pool and agreed that the body shop could bottle the water and make a huge profit! An amazing place, so unspoilt and pretty.
After our tea tree soaking we headed up past the huge sand dunes to a place called tripod point and had an amazing view over the island where you could see the skyscrapers of Brisbane. Lovely and peaceful up there and a world away from the traffic and rush and tare of Brissy! To finish the day off we went down to Amenity point and watched the sunset! A great day with so many cool things to see and experience. Again a place I would love to return to. Its definatly a little gem which tourists have not yet found...
That evening we chilled on the beach with a few beers around a camp fire-The icing on the cake for a fantastic 5days!
Next stop Auntie Wendys...
After that I search for more adventure!
