Road trip to Darwin.
Had an amazing trip from Cairns up to Darwin! Saw so much on 2900km journey up there and the 4 day adventure showed just how vast Australia really is-believe you me it's HUGE.
On the first day we crossed the Atherton Tablelands and stopped at Mount Surprise where we had lunch and were able to hold various different snakes including a brown tipped cobra and carpet snake. Was such a cool experience! We also saw the world's most deadly snake known as a Thaipan. It was quite cruel to watch but we saw the snake devour a live mouse-yuk yuk yuk. You could see how quickly its venom paralysed the mouse and just how powerful it was. After this we carried on through dry and dusty straight roads to Croydon where we stayed for the night in an old pub and enjoyed a drink or 3 with the local's aswell as some pool! The first thing which struck me after we had crossed The Atherton tablelands was how dry and how sparse everything was. You could drive for hundreds of kilometers through cattle stations and dry landscapes and not see anything but the odd cow or galah. It amazed me the distances between places and when you did come to a small town or roadhouse in the middle on no where it only had a few people living there. The locals informed us that they drive for 3 hours to the nearest pub to get a beer after work...Hmmm wouldn't suit me!!!
On the second day we got up at 4.45am, drove several hundred kilometers and went to Lawn Hill National Park. This place was stunning and had huge sandstone cliffs with vast gorges below. Me and Christine canoed in the gorge with some of the others and afterwards went on a walk to look down on the huge gorge. The gorge had beautiful scenery and many waterfalls surrounding it. That evening we arrived at Adel's Grove where we stayed for the night, it was raining heavily so our tour driver Troy was worried about the driving conditions the next day and which route to take. The rain was very heavy that he became concerned we may get bogged on route....Ekkkk!
Next day we again got up bright and early and headed for Cape Crawford. Troy was very worried about the driving conditions but decided to take the top road and take our chances! The conditions were very bad, the mud was so deep and the 4x4 van had huge problems getting through some sections of the track. At times we were skidding all over the place! Great fun I thought and felt abit like a rollercoaster!!! The whole van was covered in mud and you could hardly see out of the side windows! On route he told us about the flying doctors service and we got a tad worried that it might be us being rescued at some point on this road trip..
After many hours of crazy driving we crossed the Queensland and Northern Territory border-Wow we were now in a whole new state! We took a group photos to mark the event !It was quite bizarre as soon as we crossed the border the sky became so so lovely and blue. Not a cloud in the sky and the contrast of the green trees and orange tracks made for some amazing photos opps.
After driving for many many many more hours down dusty ornage tracks and passing through several small creeks and cattle stations we arrived in Darwin....
Now heres where the fun begins....
