Hello from Darwin - population not listed so they must have lost count or they got lost in the cyclone. When we arrived in the suburbs we realised we had not seen a traffic light for 3 weeks - really strange and good job we remembered to stop.
Have been into town on the bus. Cheap but rather a lot of locals on board and the perfume in the air was not so good!!
Darwin is newly built after cyclone Tracey in 1974. They seem to dwell on WWII and the cyclone as the town contains plenty of information and photos about these. They even have the WWII fuel storage tunnels open for viewing. They have never been used but were built after the Japanese bombed Darwin. By the time they were finished the war was over. Still as a tourist site it makes money.
Cullen Bay Marina was more for us, with all the alfresco dining overlooking the bay with all the yachts and fishing boats and drinking wine of course.
Something that was novel and quite unique was the Deckchair Cinema. Situated on the edge of Darwin harbour it was brilliant sitting under the stars watching the film with the odd possum wandering around under your seat. Very different and we had a good laugh. Of course, I did my normal trick and slept some of the time, exhausted from all the walking in the heat.
Have a couple more days here and going to a sunset beach market and another boat cruise up the Adelaide River this time where I hope to see a big croc or two as I haven't seen a big one yet - croc that is!!
We will be heading south again over the weekend so who knows where the next internet stop will be - not as easy as we thought it would be - just regret not bringing the laptop.
4000+ miles to date.
