The old English settlement of the Cameron Highlands was a god send. One of the happiest places for sure. We're not sure how many places we have said we want to live now, but this is on the list for sure. Why did we like it so much?! Becuase they grow tea and have the scones on sale everywhere. As well as this we stayed in the nicest hostel ever which had films and cake daily.
Getting into this walking stuff, we dedicated our first day to what the guide said to be 'a gentle stroll through the highlands'. As annoying as Maeve was, we did miss her when we walked 1km out of our way to the hospital rather than the trek start point. This 'stroll' consisted of a pretty waterfall followed by....wading through streams (lots of them due to the rain...its loads cooler here), climbing up steep hills as paths had been destroyed, dodging falling branches/trunks, sliding through muddy banks and using tree roots for rope as we scaled along cliff faces. Although we like to think we are adventerous this proved a little too much with Jen screaming "I cant do it, I cant do it, we're not gonna make it, save yourself" (She made the foot descent with ease after a little coaching). Finally we ended up in the middle of a plantation, complete with men in triangle hats. The memory of the the scene from "The Beach" where they discovered the plantation and got gunned down sprang to mind...luckily they had shovels instead of machine guns. It wasn't so much the hard work (although our legs were still killing from the other walk), more the fact that our clothes got actual dirt on them when we'd only just done a wash! In case you were getting concerned that we have turned into fit people, we haven't. Our sole motivation was the Boa tea plantation at the end of the walk which serves the nicest afternoon tea! It was well worth the full 12km hike!
That night took ourselves into town where we had the best Indian food ever (Malaysia has loads of Indian food). We got....hald a chicken, rice, two sauces, and the biggest, lovliest naan bread with a drink for 1 pound. At that point we were ready to give up our British passports and sign alligance to Malaysia forever.
The Cameron Highlands also has loads of strawberry farms so we thought we'd explore our agricultural tendancies and go off strawberry picking. Still tired from the walk we got a cab to a farm which consisted of a green house with ordinary plants and a shop. Apparently strawberries have to be in season (no one told us that!) So instead we settled on a strawberry milkshake. The next day when we left the Highlands we saw the abundance of strawberry picking fields two minutes down the road, we were not impressed.
It was amazing here, pictures don't do it justice at all. Just so different to what we have seen/done so far. Could have stayed forever but the beach called. Â
