Hello!
We have finally started our trip :) Packed to the rafters we left Maroochydore on 30th September down to Brisbane to visit Terry and Di, had a beautiful home cooked meal before arriving at Matt & Becs. Next morning, 1st October we drove via Burleigh to Byron Bay in a roadtrip convoy with Matt, Bec, Nate and their friends Beth and Matt S.
Hired an awesome beach house for the night on the main street of Byron Bay with a huge backyard, BBQ and direct access to the beach. An awesome find as finding accomodation for this particular weekend for 7 had been a hard task, being not only in the middle of school holidays but also a long weekend for those without kids!
Short walk to the beach and right off shore were 3 groups of whales, so we took their waving as a sign to stop in at Byrons famous Beach Hotel where we could have a cold drink while watching them play in the ocean. Magic!
Saw a sign on the way into town pointing to the Byron Bay Brewery , so we stopped by. They specialise in boutique style beers, so we all decided to try the tasting plate. It was $10 for a plate with 5 of the beers on, with rather generous samples. The blonde beer was the all round favourite and the 'billy goats gruff' (looked like guiness) was probably the least liked. Like every place in Byron Bay its a little but different from the norm, a budda garden surrounding the brewing room, a cinema with couches and wonderful art all over the walls.
Had a yummy BBQ before some entertaining drinking games, then a trip out to town to watch a "psychedellic rock" band back at the Beach Hotel, great place where young and old were boogying down. There was a man well into his 60's with all the dance moves, the young girls were dancing around him so Luke thought he better learn some moves from him. Proved to be hilarious haha. Stopped by 'Cocomangas' for an infamous jam jar which literally was a jam jar filled with a special concoction which went down a treat after the beer in the arvo.
In the morning packed up and headed round the beaches for some whale watching and swimming for those brave enough. Warm enough outside but unfortunately the sun hasnt been out, and a few showers while at the beach didnt deter most of us who "were going to get wet anyway right!"
Goodbyes all round as we leave our friends for Yamba, not a big drive. Great little beach town, so quiet after Byron Bay. Staying in the YHA as its not tent weather tonight, only staying one night so wouldnt get the chance to dry out the tent.
Off to Coffs Harbour tomorrow, wishing for warm sunny weather.
Chat to you all soon Luke & Jemma
